First time viewers

As a long time fan, I'd like to know how any first time viewers felt about it. Was it worth your money? Did you fall in love, or do you loath its entirety? Just curious here.

I bought it yesterday, having heard very little about it... and by very little, i really mean absolutely nothing! However, it did have a very cool box, i dig comic books - because i'm cool and thought 10 hours of viewing was easily worth 30 quid.

Anyway, i popped it in last night and for the first 30minutes or so i thought to myself: "Ah, it's like listening to some jazz bohemian beatnik type guy... thing!"
However, the series began to grow on me come the 45minute mark. I watched the first disc and the first two chapters of the second disk in one sitting and i plan on watching a good 2-3 hours tonight!

Not entirely sure i'm madly in love with it just yet and i don't completely and utterly agree with everything said so far in terms of politics, not that i really know the first thing about politics! Some of the writing is simply awesome though and the whole concept is very cool indeed.

Will be sure to return and comment once i've watched it all!

might as well post my thoughts on Broken Saint from my thread ^_^
----------------------

Alright! I finished watching Broken Saints!

Overall I really enjoyed this series. I took my time to watch the whole series.

The ending actually gave me a good emotional impact which could sometimes be hard to achieve in today's entertainment industry.

I have to admit though, I did not really get into the story plot until late DVD disc 1/early DVD disc 2. For me, the story started to get quite interesting from there onward.

I liked the art style, which seems to be a mixture of western cartoon and eastern anime. The style do vary, but I could see the quality keep evolving. Towards the later episodes of the story, I could easily forget that I was watching a "comic book" but not an "anime".

The story itself is quite interesting too, although I do feel I have seen many similar things on other platforms, Broken Saints does have enough plot twists like the backstory on the Fiji Island that made it stand out.

One thing I thought Broken Saints could improve a bit would be the voice over though. Sometimes I do wish a character would speak with more "urgency", I get the feeling sometimes and I thought "I probably wouldn't speak that slow when in that kind of conversation."

The character development was really great, toward the end of the story, I really cared about what would happen to each character.

--------

can't think of much else now, when I think of some other thoughts I'll post them up.

Overall : I really enjoyed it, glad I spent 39 bucks for it! :)

I rented it at Blockbuster on a whim, and it blew my mind...

It was a little obtuse to begin with, but the quality of the artwork, the often brilliant writing (even if I didn't understand everything, some of the quotes were very memorable), and the complete originality of the art form kept me watching...and I didn't have to wait long until things became very clear. I ran out and rented the other chapters immediately.

I couldn't get enough. Parts of it left me breathless and quite emotional. My concern was that the finale simply couldn't live up the the nine hours of prelude, and to a certain extent, that proved true for me. Things didn't quite come together with the degree of revelation that was built up previous to the ending. And I will agree that some of the voice-over work was not top notch...

However, much of the voice work, particularly with Shandala and Raimi, was so masterful that the side characters' lesser voicework didn't matter too much. I watched every moment using an excellent pair of headphones, which really helps surround you in the environment. I have to say, that without headphones, I think you'd miss much of the superior soundwork that was done for the DVD's. There's really a big difference.

To me, it seems a completely original artform, combining many forms of mass media and bringing it together in a NEARLY flawless way. Which elements of the frame they chose to animate, how they animated the text, the amalgamation of voice and sound...all this together with a stellar and socially relevant story that spans and exceeds any specific genre.

In short, it's one of the better and more original viewing experiences I've had. I'd advise those who can't get into it to get a really good pair of headphones, have a few beers, and give it another go...don't worry too much in the beginning about trying to figure things out, just let the artwork and experience wash over you. The understanding will come. It's sort of like a roller-coaster that lifts you very slowly up the hill, and once you get to the top, you can finally see how high you are and how thrilling is the track ahead.

I had never heard of Broken Saints but saw an extended trailer on 'Nightwatch' that aroused my interest and bought it recently. I am currently submerged in the series and, so far, have to say that it's brilliant. I love the artwork, the ideas, the animated text..everything. For those who are still in the early stages, please persevere! It takes some time to get into it but once you get to the end of Disc 1 and the begining of Disc 2, you will be intrigued and seriously unnerved...keep watching!!

Yeap, I absolutly agree with the last reply...
I picked up the 1st 2 DVDs from a DVD rental store, (i thought it was anime...lol..). The first DVD was kinda slow for my taste, and i didn't like it much, but since i had paid for the 2nd i watched it too on the next day, but when that was done, i run to the store and rented the 3rd DVD. Unfortunatly the 4th was out so i still haven't seen it, but i'm in love with this series, i sat down and wrote down all the quotes from the 1st , 2nd, and 3rd DVD... i'll probably post it all on IMDB after i have all the comments.

But here is one that i fell in love with.

This is from DVD 3 Episdoe 2 - Ending Quote.

"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don't alter thier views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit thier views..."
"... which can be uncomfortable, if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."

I picked up BS last night, and have watched the first act.

I found the first five or so episodes very self-indulgent, more than a bit adolescent, and profoundly in need of some tight editing. It seems another case of 'writer/director' syndrome. Unimaginative hoodoo-guru mystic characters from central casting, D&M ramblings, adolescent meaning-of-the-world sub poetry, pretentious quotes ('this is like, literature, Man, cause I can quote Nietzsche...' , and almost NO PLOT or even dialogue worthy of the name. The histronic voiceovers (when the script is bad, moan and sob a lot)were especially grating. This is not the voice actors' fault, its definitely a poor script.

However, some of the visuals and occasional word grabs were effective, a sort of Gaiman for the petulant goth crowd, though without that writer's gift for character, language or pacing.

However, I'm going to persevere. The chapter in the first act where there was an inkling of plot - the hack - was engaging and well done. Reading posts, many believe that things improve as the plot kicks in. I hope so, because there is plenty of promise in the nature of this media. If so, its a pity that the beginning is so dreadful, because many will turn off completely after an hour or so.

Is this a breakthrough product or something to give a fourteen year old goth niece instead of black eye shadow? I've yet to decide, I'll watch some more and report back.

I had to agree with you, especially at the beginning. It feels as if the writers had gone into it TRYING to sound really pretentious. But, I've just gotten to the last disc, and I'm really happy with the way it's all turned out. The episodes are lengthening, and people are actually DOING things other than wandering around and composing poetry about how insane they are. I can't wait to watch it through again, and pick up on all the subplots I probably missed because I didn't give the writers enough credit.

I agree with you - the hack was awesome. It gets even better.

well im half way through at the moment, just finished disc 2. it started off real slow, just wondering wear the hell is this thing going and when will it start to get to the guts of the story. though after finishing the second disc *spoiler here* and the attack on ramai's apartment, im completely hooked and just cant wait to finish the rest of the series. the more i watch the more i feel i didnt waste my money.

reply

I'm now watching it for the second time, and I have to say...all that stuff that didn't make sense when you were watching the first disc, all ends up making sense when you know how everything plays out. What seems like random poetry or strange visual images is actually foreshadow and prophecy, and quite sensical indeed. The whole thing now seems very, very well planned out, and not nearly as obtuse as I first thought.

I've been a fan since I watched the original version on the site. Then yesterday I saw it in JB-Hifi and just had to buy it. Cost me AU$40. I've only watched the first chapter and I'm pretty impressed so far with the voice-acting and the new artwork. Will post again when I've seen more.

It's not necrophilia if they're UNdead!!!

I've just finished the series after watching it on and off over a month or so.

Overall, I really liked it. I wouldn't say it took any time to warm to it - I loved the artwork and music right away.

The story took its time in advancing during the first stages, but this gave time for character development, which I suppose was the point.

The plot had plenty going for it, including a decent spirit and ethical point of view, though sometimes tending towards a kind of 1960s / new age feel.

Definitely worth the money, though, especially if you're looking for something different.

hi there,

i finished watching ep24 last night. i really liked how it was made. the artwork was okay, the music was very good and the entire idea of a flashcomic is great. but when it comes to the story... well, here is my opinion:
the parts of the story that were great, were parts i had already seen in two anime: Serial Experiments Lain (where the entire wireless-world-connection-idea already appears in pretty much the same way) and Neon Genesis Evangelion (pretty simular when it comes to character developement and symbols/style in BS. also there is a "human instrumentality project" with one of the female characters as the key of it). im not a die-hard anime-fan but this one was very obvious. also i think that some of the "deep-meaning" scenes just appeared meaningfull because they were veeery slow made. i like slow movies and such but sometimes it just seemed over the top. i guess you could show a pepsi-commercial 5-times slower and it would appear very clever.
a nice thing were all the x-files and twin peaks hints. that was more a fun thing and not copied into the story.
i guess im gonna take another look at the dvd edition sometime, but for now i got the feeling that BS - even though its innovative for the new kind of presentation - is overrated.
