I am a bit puzzled...

Why didnt they include Deep Blue Sea? I went to that movie at the age of 8, and it was the coolest childhood movie experience in the theatre.
I remember jumping sky high at the Samuel Jackson death scene, and looking at it now just makes me respect the movie even more, because Jackson was the most popular actor in the movie, which makes it even more surprising.
The first death scene also was quite surprising for me, at least when I was a kid.
I really dont get why this movie got snubbed, especially after Stephen King praised it, and he commented on a lot of the movies in the show. Evem The Wizard of Oz was on the list, WTF?

Watch some scary movies and then come on back when you're done.

reply

Yeah, really constructive.
There is no need to be a dick just because our opinions differ about whether this movie has scary moments or not. The list, as I mentioned before, has Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz on the list, for f@#$s sake. In my opinion, Deep Blue Sea has more scary or suspenseful scenes in it than those two family movies combined, so it deserves to be on that list.

And in my opinion you should go see some scary movies. Willy Wonka and Wizard of Oz scared countless more people than Deep Blue Sea. Countless.

It's all good, brah. They're just opinions. Everyone's got one.

reply

Yeah, because I havent seen Alien, or The Shinning, or other classics - that must be the reason I think that Deep Blue Sea deserves to be on the list instead of two movies, which didnt scare me at all. Before I responded, I checked out your ratings and I saw that we agree on some movies and thought that maybe I would get a reasonable response the second time, which saddly is not the case. So maybe next time when you try to masquerade your arogance as knowledge or "an advice", do your homework first, and if youre too lazy or uninterested to do so, dont bother writing anything, because it is a waste of everyones time.

You take yourself and IMDb message boards far too seriously. We probably do share many of the same film interests but I don't care that much to research who I'm responding to. Sorry, man.

reply

Thats not what I meant - if youre going to give someone "advice", at least put an effort in it, not just say the first ignorant thing that pops in your head.
Also, I dont take myself or imdb boards too seriously - I just expect to receive an adequate answer when I try to present a reasonable argument about something. If its not clear enough, I didnt start this thread to troll someone - I was genuinely interested in someone elses opinion about why this movie wasnt mentioned in this program, or the subsequent extensions. And yes, I understand that you gave an opinion - the movie is not scary. Why be a dick about it? Also, why do you asume that most people think that? Have you checked out the % of the ratings that movie has got?
I mean, its not necessary to be a condescending dick to express your opinion, at least not when the Op is sincere.

Good Lord! It was a throwaway reply to a thread started two months ago! Worst mistake I ever made....

Here: I saw Deep Blue Sea in the theaters when I was 18 years old and I didn't find it scary (jump scares and stingers don't make a film scary, IMO). I didn't think it was a funny movie, either. It came out just as Samuel L. Jackson was beginning to be on screen way too much and the shtick was running thin. This film is on the same level as Anaconda and Lake Placid, though the latter had some redeeming moments.

I'm sorry but I just don't see how anyone could find Deep Blue Sea scary. Like, at all. The opening scene of Jaws is infinitely more frightening than the entire length of this garbage movie.

reply

Was that so hard? :D
As I said in the op, I saw it in the theater when I was 8 - at that point I hadnt seen a lot of horror movies, so of course I thought it was scary at that time. Nowadays I dont find almost any movie scary, but I do appreciate the well executed scenes anyway. As for Jaws, I agree the beginning is a great scene, but overall, the movie has dated badly, and I find it somewhat corny at times, which makes it, in my opinion, overrated.
Im in no way saying that D B S is a masterpiece, but I do think that its a mostly well executed movie in a decade, when big budget shark movies were, to my knowledge, non existent. As I mentioned before, I think the death of S.L. Jackson is an interesting twist at the time, when he was mostly known to play a "bad ass" character. Even so, I agree that he wearing out his welcome, playing the same character all the time - just like Bruce Willis (who I actually think is worse).

Big time disagree.

About Bruce Willis?

reply

Yes. Not sure how you can say he was playing the same character... look at his movies between 95 and 99.

reply

Actually, our age difference may preclude us from having much in common, film-wise. Bruce Willis is still a stud.

reply

I dont know if its a matter of age, cause I have friends about your age, who share the same view as me. Maybe the difference is in our nationality?
I, as most people, loved him in the first 3 Die Hards, but 4 was a SuperJohn movie, and, from what Ive read about 5, its even worse. Of course, there ar other great performances by him (I liked 12 monkeys a lot), but lately, he is allways playing this bald jerk with a devil may care smile, which is becoming tiresome. I havent seen Looper and Moonrise Kingdom yet, but I will in the near future. Also, the whole sharade with Expendables didnt help his case.

Ah, I thought you were saying that Bruce Willis was wearing out his welcome in 1999, which was far from true. I get what you're saying now, though I still don't agree.

reply

Yeah, I should have thought that one out better, because in the 90s he was very versatile (another fun, though small, performance was in 4 rooms). I admit I havent seen almost anything he has done in the past decade, but thats because nowadays the trailers spoil the movie anyway, and its easy to get which Willis is in the movie - the good actor, or the "badass". Still, I look forward to Looper and Moonrise Kingdom (mostly because of Edward Norton).
