Movies left out of Even Scarier Movie Moments...

Here are some movies I thought should have been in Bravo's Even Scarier Movie Moments:

*High Tension

*Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

*House of 1000 Corpses (was way scarier than Devils Rejects)

*Predator (I cant believe this didnt make the first list)

*Sleepaway Camp

*Cannibal Holocaust

*The Omen II - the scene where the woman gets her eyes pecked out by a crow and then wanders a highway, blind, until she is hit by an 18 wheeler really freaked me out as a kid.

*Invasion of the Body Snatchers(78) - that ending was pretty shocking.

*Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

*Muholland Drive - Its a shame they didnt mention any David Lynch movies on the show (I think Eraserhead might have been mentioned). Those are some of the creepiest movies of all time. And they put in stuff that wasnt even close to being scary like 2001: A Space Oddysey

*The Descent - this movie was really good. It should have got the #1 spot instead of Hostel.

Movies that I thought were misplaced:

Hostel - Its a decent movie, but I definitely wouldnt call it one of the scariest movies of all time. It totally didnt deserve to be #1 on the list above better movies like Devils Rejects and A Clockwork Orange.

Dead Alive - there is nothing scary about this movie at all. This movie is more like a gory comedy. This wouldnt scare a toddler. It just has a bunch of gross out scenes.

2001: A Space Odyssey - Im not even gonna go into that.

Army of Darkness - Though a good movie, their is nothing at all remotely scary about this movie. Its more of a comedy.

Thanks for saying Descent and Invasion ('78), so I didn't have to.

woodliff-1 - Read your post on the other topic and was great to see you recognised some Lynch moments - "Lost Highway" is the one which freaks me out - the party scene mainly when he's talking to Mystery Man - the eyes!!!
In fact most the films you've posted, I would have to agree with

Most of those listed were only thrilling or strange.if you don't think they have the most scary moments, then why did you say they should be on the list?

dude, predator was invisabel!!!
but yeah Hostel shouldnt have been on the list, i just hate those type of movies, when its gory for the sake of being gory.its not scary its just gross.
Gadzooks!-Preston & Steve rock!!

Hostel asn't gory for just the hell of it. There was actually character development. I didn't like it at first, but now have come to enjoy it.

Roth did take the time and develop the characters even in the 2nd as well even if the 3-girls were cliched.

I don't think Hostel should be in the top spot, but it wasn't just a gorefest.

I tried doing that once, making every minute count. It gave me a headache- Adrian Monk

i wasnt crazy about Hostel but the way Roth filmed it, it did feel real. These guys were in the wrong place at the wrong time and when they were in that "exhibit" it felt so real.

Hostel should have been on the list. And it wasn't gory for the sake of being gory. You're thinking of the SAW movies. Hostel had a point to it and was great (and didn't even show much gore!), unlike the Saw movies.

Two points I would like to make:

I agree Bravo should not have called the sequel "Even Scarier" and I agree it seem like they were scrapping the bottom of the barrel to find 30 movies.

Although I am not sure if it deserves the #1 spot, I believe Hostel was a good choice to put on the list.

What a lot of people on this forum don't get is that some of the movie moments were chosen because of the themes. Hostel is about rich people who can and will pay to torture and kill. It plays on the idea that this could happen.

There are plenty of movies on Bravo's list that I have seen and thought they were pretty bad. But, some are not worthy for a certain element that works.

Ginger Snaps
Return of the Living Dead (funny but creepy)
May (creepy!)
Let's scare Jessica to Death (way creepy)
Bride of Frankenstein (how was this left off both lists?)

The Mothman Prophecies is very terrifying for me. Hearing voices coming out of your sink, seeing a reflection in the mirror that isn't yours, driving for hours but not remembering any of it - can you imagine any of that actually happening to you?

reply

i also really liked "mothman prophecies." and agree, "descent" definitely should've been on the list.

Completely agree.

*Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

*Predator (I cant believe this didnt make the first list)

*Sleepaway Camp

*Cannibal Holocaust
Completely agree. Though I haven't seen Cannibal Holocaust yet, it's reputation alone trumps Blair Witch Project. Predator is an excellently scary survival movie (although... the sequel if I'm not mistaken took place in places most people would find this monster scarier in...) but it scared me. Sleepaway Camp is just plain infamous and with good reason, that last scene is one of the most famous SHOCK moments in the history of horror. It totally paved the way for all sorts of perversities in horror. We wouldn't have the word "SICK" attached to low budget horror if it weren't for movies like Sleepaway Camp. And Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is clearly one of the finest killer-themed horror films ever made.

*House of 1000 Corpses (was way scarier than Devils Rejects)
Actually... even though it's not a good movie, The Devil's Rejects has the element of intensity and that's why it was on Bravo's 30 (Even?) Scarier Movie Moments. Because it was intense and House of 1,000 Corpses wasn't actually scary or intense, at all. Michael Jackson's Thriller was scarier (A LOT, actually!) than House of 1,000 Corpses. Hell, even Meatloaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That)" music video was scarier than House of 1,000 Corpses (no disrespect to the excellent "Thriller," of course).

*The Descent - this movie was really good. It should have got the #1 spot instead of Hostel.

Hostel - Its a decent movie, but I definitely wouldnt call it one of the scariest movies of all time. It totally didnt deserve to be #1 on the list above better movies like Devils Rejects and A Clockwork Orange.
Haven't seen Descent yet, but I agree that Hostel was bumped to number 1 when other movies were scarier for sure. But Hostel was definitely worthy of scoring a place on the list. Oh, and The Devil's Rejects was not a better movie than Hostel.

*The Omen II - the scene where the woman gets her eyes pecked out by a crow and then wanders a highway, blind, until she is hit by an 18 wheeler really freaked me out as a kid.

*Invasion of the Body Snatchers (78) - that ending was pretty shocking.
Absolutely not- they should not mention sequels or remakes, unless they were like David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) and literally were scary where the first movie was just strange and freaky. I agree The Omen II was scary. It was actually much scarier than the original. But if they mention the original, which most people will since godknowsHow many consider it one of the 20-25 greatest modern horror films ever made... than they have to skip the sequel. The only sequels I feel these lists have the right to name are ones that don't have the number TWO (or 3, 4, 5, etc.) in the their Title (like- Bride of Frankenstein, or The Devil's Rejects), or sequels where clearly the first film stunk and the sequel was great.

*High Tension
It sucks, it's a piece of trash. It wasn't the least bit scary or tense. It was just sleazy (which is NOT scary), insulting (which is NOT scary), and stupid (which is NOT scary). It doesn't belong on any scariest or greatest ANY-thing list.

*Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

*Muholland Drive - Its a shame they didnt mention any David Lynch movies on the show (I think Eraserhead might have been mentioned). Those are some of the creepiest movies of all time. And they put in stuff that wasnt even close to being scary like 2001: A Space Odyssey
David Lynch doesn't now nor has he ever made horror films. Not only is he one of the most overrated directors in history, but his movies suck.

Oh... and they did mention one of his movies. In the Bravo 100, they did Blue Velvet (1986) - that was one of his movies.

Good list Ruff! You thought of some I had forgotten about. Fright Night was hellafun and Gremlins had some scary stuff in it.

reply

Forgot to add SALEM'S LOT (70's version). I just saw this again yesterday and there were quite a few moments that made me jump out of my skin! For a Made for TV movie, it was *extremely" well done.

The fact that Tobe Hooper directed it probably had a lot to do with that though.

reply

Whaddya mean "no remakes"? The 1978 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" deserved to be on the list!

From what I've seen of Hostel, I have to agree that it is gore for the sake of gore, and Eli Roth has no comprehension of true horror. Just watching him comment on these other movies that are very "un-scary" and saying, "It was so scary!" gives testimony to that. They should just go ahead and crown the Saw and Hostel movies with a new official catagory called "Gorno" instead of "Horror". These movies are gross and disturbing but they don't stay with me like "Psycho" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or "The Shining". They just don't.

For what it's worth, the moments that impacted me the most on "30 Even Scarier Movie Moments) were the moments from Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead". The first scene with the zombie husband is frightening because of the mere thought of a loved one becoming this monster without much warning. However, the second scene with the zombie childbirth I didn't find scary so much as it was tragic. The husband's inability to grasp the situation (seriously, how would you react?) and the hopelessness of Luda and her baby are horribly sad and I wanted to cry. But I didn't want to run in fear. This for me embodied the list of movies in general. They weren't really scary as much as they were tragic. The Saw movies are tragic. Oldboy was tragic. You think, "Gosh, these poor people," instead of crawling underneath a blanket and murmuring, "Mommy...Mommy..." like a true horror movie is supposed to make you do.

Actually, these were the only moments I found remotely frightening:

1) As I have already said, the zombie husband scene in "Dawn of the Dead"

2) "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." I know "2001: Space Odyssey" is not a horror movie, but HAL is one freakishly evil red dot in the wall.

3) The figure in "Vertigo." Yikes.

4) The hallucinations in "Videodrome"

I know its a disney kids movie but Darby OGill and the Little People....that banshee was scary as hell when I was kid and it still gives me the creeps.

reply

You know what? I have to agree. That banshee (especially the noise it makes) is pretty creepy.

reply

I would have found a place for the climactic scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Is House of 1000 Corpses the movie where someone is having brain surgery done on them while they are alive and awake? And The Devil Rejects is the one where the girl gets hit by a truck while the face of her husband is tied to hers? I refuse to see either of those movies. There are just certain movies here just reading about them scares the hell out of you.

I don't care if you call me crazy...because the voices in my head tell me I'm just fine
