WORST MOVIE EVER

Is this an Australian movie? Well, I don't call myself Australian. Why is it that we have to portray all Australians in our movie's as pot smoking, deadbeat lower class slobs? Suburban Mayhem, Garage Days, Occasional Course Language. Hey, I love a bit of violence and sex in films just like the next guy ... I'm an Australian Filmmaker and am quite disappointed to be honest. I realise we don't want to be like Americans, but we have to give it to them, their films are far more structured, entertaining ... movies are supposed to take audiences away, to escape the downs of life, to take us to places we can only visit in our imaginations ... if people want to debate that this film is reality and the world we live in today, well personally I want out....

I was unable to find a storyline in this movie. I was confused. It was like someone was following this mentally unstable girl around with a video camera, there was no structure or narrative. Aren't we as an audience supposed to care for our protagonist?

Anyway, that's my 5 cents.

I wouldn't call it the worst ever but it was what you would expect from MTV, even in America anything they put out is 2 hours of your life wasted. The girl wasn't even interesting enough to develop an opinion of one way or another.

Just watched on hired DVD - wasted time.

The worst movie I have ever seen. There is no movie worse than this.

I am sickened at the thought of it.

This movie validates treason.

reply

Its not Australian, its NZ.

And it's not the worst film ever made, so shut the *beep* up idiots.

Getting quite sick of everyone calling every film on IMDb the worst film ever made.

This was a decent, well made movie. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Take your half assed comments and p*ss off.

It's not NZ ... it's Australian ... I loved it.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

Uhm are you kidding? As a movie maker I presumed you would have seen the actual concept of this movie. The plot was Katrina killing her father for her brother. Pretty simple. Sure, the diversity of the character was thrown in too, but that's what the simple plot was for.

And can people stop presuming that people from other countries will watch this movie and think; 'All Australians are pot smoking, deadbeat lower class slobs'? Can you give people a bit more esteem then that?

And your right - we don't want to be like Americans. That's the beauty about Australian (and foreign) films - they're nothing like American movies. They always seem to have character that you can't get in an American film.

"movies are supposed to take audiences away, to escape the downs of life, to take us to places we can only visit in our imaginations ... if people want to debate that this film is reality and the world we live in today, well personally I want out...."

Your argument is terrible. If movies are supposed to take us away then why would we argue that the film is realistic? To be honest, I didn't ever feel that the movie was trying to portray reality. In some ways it was a place you could only visit in your imagination - Katrina's world is so unlike anyone else's.

Lastly, you're right - the audience should care about the protagonist. However, quite simply put, Katrina wasn't the protagonist. She may have been the main character but she was definitely the antagonist. I really like this concept because not many movies try this.

So that's my input.

P.S. How can you call this the Worst Movie Ever? Have you not seen (or at least heard of) the Hillz?

reply

"This is pretty much the worst video ever made"

"Like, how can you even know that Napoleon?'

" movies are supposed to take audiences away, to escape the downs of life, to take us to places we can only visit in our imaginations "

Then every film made on a small budget should never be made. This include Juno/Napoleon Dynamite/Breathless/Donnie Darko
That is an extraordinarily narrow view of what cinema is and can be.

I don't think you have to car about your protagonist.. plenty of films have protagonists who are really evil people i.e one of the great films of all time THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER. The thing that these films do well is make us HOPE that they can find their humanity... WIth me, I never felt SHE WOULD EVER. So as a character study of an out of control evil, manipulative, psycho, I think it just missed the boat.

I do agree that this is a bad film, but more because of problems with pacing, structure, and actual narrative arc. There is *beep* all character progression, and gaps (risk and points of crisis) don't test this character enough.

The problem starts with the script, as per all Australian Film. Not enough money in development.

This isn't a NZ film, to whoever said that. It clearly states on the cover "Best Australian film of the year".

I didn't think this film was half bad.

I'm sick of people claiming everything is NZ ever since LOTR. It is Australian. Get it right.

Just because you video taped yourself havin a wank doesn’t qualify you as an Aussie film maker. And besides I thought you said you don’t consider yourself Australian. Why is it that people like you find the need to slam movies like “Suburban Mayhem” on the grounds of it not reflecting society correctly. If I saw a movie that accurately reflected my neighborhood I wouldn’t want to see it, simple because it would be boring. This movie was entertaining. Besides haven’t you contradicted yourself? If you watch movies to escape from reality isn’t this the perfect film for you then? I always find it funny when people pick up a movie, see on the front cover that it contains strong violence, sex scenes, drug use and coarse language then read on the back of the case, the brief synopsis of the film, and after all this, take it home and watch it and seem absolutely stunned that the film contained too much drugs, sex and violence for them. This film delivered exactly what it promised.

I wouldn't call this the worst film ever but it is definitely a film that is hard to like.

Your argument that there is no storyline is moot because there was an obvious plot and the film was SUPPOSED to be like a documentary...its a style of film. If you were an aspiring film-maker you would probably know this having seen films like Spinal Tap or Blair Witch Project.

And once again someone comes out and complains about the australian film industry. do I have to keep reminding you all of the great films that have come from Australia?

First off you have the brilliant Mad Max as well as the even better Road Warrior, The Quiet Earth is one of the best science fiction films ever. Walkabout is a great film, Gallipoli is a classic, The Man From Snowy River, Romper Stomper, Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert, The Piano, Moulin Rouge, Rabbit Proof Fence, The Proposition, Jindabyne, Happy Feet, etc.

I gave Suburban Mayhem a solid 3/10 because it wasn't very original and at times I wanted to pull my hair out becuase of the frustrating lapses in logic from these incredibly stupid characters.

I totally agree with you that the sutralian film industry only make films to win awards and not rake in the cash, which to me is ironic considering the t.v industry in my opinion does the opposite not including the incredible underbelly and summer heights high. to put it simply when we make genre films they are heavily critized for thier "attempt" at being "american" which is soooooo dissapointing, considering we have some amzing movie makers within the country.

As australians i feel we should exploit what the rest of the world tend to travel to our shores for sun, beautiful beaches, beautiful and friendly people and a good old party. Make a sort of updated castle, kind of family drama but illistrate the problems that they face today. throw a bit of chris lilley comedy and hey even some fat pizza comedy, blend wth some great aussie music and top off with a fantatsic cast and breathtaking locations and you have a killer movie or even sets of films.

Agreed. It's ok, but short of good, and very short of great.

Good to see Mia W in it before Hollywood took notice.

wow, exaggerate much?

i took a long time to getting around to finally watching this movie, and I've gotta say, i was really impressed. it's definitely one of the best Aussie films I've seen in a while.

firstly, the storyline is simple - did the girl kill or help plan to kill her dad? structure was present in a basic 3 act structure:

ACT 1: establishing the background (junkie mum, brother in jail, easy going dad, a single mum herself, and a loyal boyfriend who doesn't mind her infidelities) & establishing the problem (brother in jail, wants money to appeal, dad is 'keeper of the money')

ACT 2: developing solution (coaxing Kenny)

ACT 3: climax (murder) - resolution (getting away with it).

the character development was amazing. Katrina was an antagonist to every other character in the film that you know is trying to help her, and are acting out of kindness. there's no growth in her because there's no room for her to grow. she's rotten, through and through. the father grows by finally taking a stand for himself and the child just before his demise. the boyfriend, Rusty, grows as he goes from being the loyal sidekick to genuine concern for the child, and finally solidifies that he's there for the girl in his life and nothing else.

it's just a downright amazing portrayal of the way mayhem can influence the world around it. these are the sorts of films i'd be proud to show an international audience, as I'm pretty sure 'Australia' has just shown that we can't do what Americans do so well, so we have to do it our own way.
