*spoiler I think*

It was a good ending, not like one of those sappy american films where they see each other, the mother starts crying, the kid cries, they hug each other and live happily ever after.

Totally agree, I was hoping to see the mother's face, but then quickly appreciated that we didn't.

MORE SPOILERS

who_wants_a_pony: I couldn't have said it better---I'm with you. Lighting shifts to sepia, voiceover reading fairytail ending, soft focus pan in...freeze frame!

That was so out of step with the rest of the film. People are saying it wasn't a Hollywood ending, but I disagree. It wasn't a Hollywood flick until the final 45 seconds. The ending totally seemed tacked on.

Still a good movie, but oddly disjointed ending...

Think about it. There's no way seeing the mother's face would live up to our expectations; she'd just be a person. But to him she's everything, and that's why we see his face. The ending was perfect.

If it was so bad OP how would you have ended it? I already know I 'm going to prefer the current ending.

I think they are allowing us to figure it out for ourselves, which is cool because it makes people think.

Sad to say, I think Vanya's biological mother would have already retrieved him from the orphanage had she been both ready and willing, so if 'Italianetz' had run another 15 minutes we may have seen Vanya arriving back at the orphanage (epecially if the filmmakers were willing to be honest about it...)

-but that would have been a pretty pointless ending to a great story...right?

There are hundreds of thousands of children in Russian orphanages. Very, very few get to go back to their birth families. If Vanya got to stay with his mother for certain that would elevate Italianetz beyond "fiction" to "fantasy".

I thought the ending wasn't very good either, but reading some of the posts in this thread:

"Also about the end/confused"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450450/board/nest/64894215

helped me understand what the ending was (or wasn't) about. From reading all the posts, perhaps it is left open to interpretation?

This movie could have ended in so many ways. I thought the mother would have just looked at her son and walked away.

Regardless, really good movie with a not-so-much-to-my-liking ending. Grade: B+.

What was this film really about? The determination of the boy, succeeding against impossible odds, a tried a true formula, but a formula that when done well can result in a excellent film. In this case I think they mostly succeed. The likelihood of such a reunion actually happening is sadly next to nothing, But this IS a film and for Vanya not to succeed there really would be no story. I was perfectly happy with the way they handled the ending, amongst all the gloom and dreariness we want to see some happiness.
