question about story

does anyone know if this is based on the play uncle vanya by anton chekhov?

reply

i haven't seen that play. but since this film takes place in orphanage, no one had a family in the movie. although vanya is reunited with his mother in the last seconds of the movie. so i am not sure who would of been an uncle.

reply

Uncle Vanya (1900), is a melancholic story of Sonia and his brother-in-law Ivan (Uncle Vanya), who see their dreams and hopes passing in drudgery for others. No relation.

reply

It has absolutely nothing to do with Chekhov's 'Uncle Vanya'!

reply

Yes, as a matter of fact, the film was based on the early life of Chekhov, who wrote the screenplay and directed it! He starred in it also, and was nearly nominated for best supporting actor at Cannes.

However, while driving through a cherry orchard on the way to a wedding and the festivities with his three sisters, he was discoursing on the harmful effects of tobacco, got distracted by a seagull, and was driven off the road by that worthless fellow Platanov, the boor--becoming a reluctant tragic hero.

Oh, and the curmudgeonly but wise headmaster at the orphanage is played by Chekhov's very own Uncle Vanya.

and everyone always tells me that a russian lit major is useless... :)

reply

This film has nothing to do with Chekhov!

(It's really about Captain Kirk.)

reply

You are all way off base.

This movie is actually a thinly disguised remake of The Outlaw Josie Wales with only a few points altered in the scriptwriter's (unsuccesful) attempt to make it appear to be something new.

The switch of location to Russia didn't fool me for a second.

reply

You actually made me laugh out loud.

Brilliant summary, Limegenger!!!

In the beginning one actor states, " and this is the real Russia" - a drepressing fog enshrounded landscape! If Uncle Vanya rued the wasting of his life, this movie shows the bleak result in Russia.

What do they have left? They can sell off their children!
