I am adopted and have just met my mother...

Sorry for the self-indulgent post here but I feel compelled to mention this...

I am 30 years old and have known I'm adopted since I was seven. Last week I met my mother for the first time as an adult. It took a long time to find her but already we have a strong bond.

Anyway, I'm going to see this film tonight at the Irish Film Institute. I hope it is as promising as it looks. I wonder if it will have a happy ending. Sometimes they really do happen you know?!:)

I'm happy for you.

So am I.

I spent an entire year of my life (at 16) looking for my birth parents. No go. Now, at 64 I occasionally chase leads on Google or Yahoo. My adoptive parents passed away decades ago, and I have a happy and productive life and a child of my own. Still.....

Just the other day happened to meet a man who was adopted and always knew that. Having watched "The Italian" a few days prior to that, I asked the man if he was ever eager to find and meet his biological mother. He said - "yes, for 5 minutes. Then - to hell with it".

We laid out the whole story for our son when he was seven years old. Of course he wanted to know why his biological mother left him at the hospital and never saw him again, knowing he was going into the orphanage system. Once he got through that he became very much at peace with being adopted and talks freely about it now.

I know we made the right choice telling him the truth as he became old enough to understand. Hiding it is foolish: sooner or later they will find out (in any number of ways), and in that position I couldn't help but feel I'd been lied to my entire life.
