John Cusack could not pull this role off.

Im sorry everyone out there but John Cusack is not a good actor. Hes fine when hes playing in a goofy comedy role because thats how he acts. but for this very serious emotional movie and all the intense trauma he was going through. His voice never changed tones his emotions were wooden. This movie really needed someone good for this role. Edward norton, Jake Gyllenhaal or Ryan Gosling would have worked great I think

Except, he did. And the guy can act when given the chance.

lol if you think he did you know nothing about movies or acting. He was fine at first but as soon as th emotion came into it he was very wooden. He can not act he acts the same in every movie he is in.

deatman, everything you accused Cusack of (which is arguable) is what many people say about Gosling. Having only seen a couple of his films I can't speak for his entire career, but from what I saw he has one facial expression and a deadpan voice.

I thought Cusack did OK. I thought he expressed quite a bit of emotion. A lot of it was pretty subtle, and it was a very nuanced performance I though. Did you need him to scream "I'M SO SCARED OF THIS SCARY ROOM RIGHT NOW!!!!" to get it across? And in the past he has played some great roles that weren't goofy comedy types.

At least in my opinion. The key word being opinion. Art is subjective, and it may be hard for you to understand, but your opinion isn't the only "right" one. Cusack may not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean that people that did like him know less about movies or acting.

Cusack was good. He could play the part better, but overall I had no real problems with him.

Your insane! John cusack isn't like my fave actor or anything but he's been around way longer than jake gylenhal and Ryan gosling! And they've never done any earth shattering roles themselves in my opinion, they're okay but not any better than John. And he did rock this movie, I think he was perfect for this movie and can't imagine it with anyone else, ESPECIALLY JAKE GYLENHAL AND RYAN FREAKING GOSLING FROM THE EFFING NOTEBOOK! R u high! Omg

Agreed. He was perfect. When he was crying over his daughter you believed it.

He also played off the smug know-it-all writer bit very well in the beginning. Fun to watch.

I enjoyed John Cusacks performance. I'll admit that a more subtle show of emotions has a larger impact on me than some of the more extreme actors. Another actor that was more extreme would of turned this silly for me. John, when he shows emotions there is always that edge of possible insanity, peaking out from his purposeful front of the guy in charge.

Edward Norton I adore, however not for this role.

Jake and Ryan are not mature enough to have the same impact. Jake, however has some of the same qualities in acting that John has imo. Ryan I haven't seen in enough to even make a judgement on.
