What made the room evil to begin with?

Just curious if it was ever addressed in the short story on which the movie was based or if anyone has said in canon what MADE the room evil in the first place. Was it ever explained WHY the room became evil? Was the guy who built The Dolphin Hotel just twisted (a la "Ghostbusters")? Did something happen that cursed the room? If there is no definitive answer, what are your speculations?

Neither the movie nor the short story explains a thing, "It's just an evil fu**ing room."

It appears to be the Le Cinquante Sept Deces 1939, of course. In fact, it was the cognac that saved him. Quite a metaphor(?) for any alcoholics, or cigarette smokers in the audience. The ending and upon keeping what was left, to me, was a wee bit predictable when I saw it.

I think it was a combination of it being on the 13th floor, and 1, 4, and 8 adding up to 13.
