Isn't this better than the 1973 version?

I think this movie is much better than 1973 version.
I have seen it before the 1973 version and was surprised by low ratings. But I have given it a 9.

So I decided to watch the older version too only to get disappointed. I could not rate it more than 5.

The plot is much better here with the female dominance on the island theme and a non arrogant main character.

Totally agree.

This film is superior in the sense that the youtube clips make me laugh to the point of pissing myself, if thats what you mean by better.

I'm not much on rear-window ethics.

Nope. Different opinion.

I still think the original was very welcome well acted.

I still need to see the original, but I do disagree that Malus is not arrogant. On the island he seems to wave his gun around a lot and is quite dismissive of their (crazy) laws & customs. There were many times in the movie that I wanted both Malus & the Cultists to walk into the water. Not much as far a likable here at all.

Sure.... It's better at slapstick comedy and pure unintentional humor than the original was.

Actually, this Wicker Man remake was one of the best comedies I have ever seen.

And Christopher Lee gave a fantastic sinister performance. The only thing I didn't like about the original were the couple of songs. Otherwise it absolutely shat all over the remake!

Come to think of it, maybe that's what the remake needed - some musical numbers?

Hell no. The remake was god awful. Easily in my bottom 10 movies of all time. Nic Cage holds a few spots there.

I think the arrogance of the main character brings out the hypocrisy and irony intended in comparing religions.

I strongly disagree. The 1973 version is a masterpiece. In the original film, it revolved an island of Pagans. The remake seemed to create a fake religion, one that revolves around the superiority of women. Everything about the remake was just awful. Ellen Burstyn simply cannot replace Christopher Lee's character. The film completely separated itself from the original idea. The background score was awful, very cheesy. The acting was horrible. I respect Nicholas Cage as an actor, but there were even scenes where his acting ability was lacking and unconvincing. Plus "the bees" was just a ridiculous aspect. Nothing made sense. Even the final sacrifice scene didn't live up to the original. What made the original Wicker Man so creepy, is how the community felt so justified and convinced by their religious beliefs. They actually killed the Sergeant in "a nice way", which is what made the ending scene so epic. In the remake, it seemed like nothing more than a bunch of hateful women. The whole "the drone must die" chant was just lame, and completely steers clear of the original concept. There are so many flaws in the remake. Without a doubt, the original Wicker Man is the best version and always will be.
