Doctor David Tennant

I have not watched any of the Casanova episodes and this is the first time i've really seen Tennant acting, he looks good as an actor.....he played sci-fi well, but can he cut it as the Doctor??????

Nice stepping stone though, he must obviously like science-fiction to do Quatermass......No wonder his name came up rather quickly in terms of replacing Eccleston

Could be interesting if he takes the title role of Who.......

Good Luck

He's a big fan of Doctor Who and stuff like Blake's 7 - apparently when he worked with Gareth Thomas in a play he brought a DVD for him to sign :-)

I'd love to see him as the Doctor, but I'm still in two minds as to the new series. It's difficult to judge on the strength of just two episodes, but no-one in the house cared for tonight's Who episode at all. I liked the pilot, but will be very interested to see later episodes with the old adversaries the Daleks.

reply

Yeah, i know, judge it after the end of the series maybe.

It's official David Tennant is the Doctor: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2005/04_april/16/tennant.shtml

Being in Australia I have not seen him in Quatermass yet.

Put it this way, he looked good, he had bags of energy and if his acting was that good live, then just think what it could look like when he films it and does take after take to perfect it ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

He showed so much energy that at one point he nearly fell flat on his a** when he ran from one part of the lab to the other.

I thought he was great in Casanova and Quatermass - although I did feel in the latter case, the production overall was a little lacking in the fear factor! That said, it was interesting for them to tackle something like that live, I hope something else may be attempted in the future... perhaps a touch more lively? I noticed DT skidding as he ran to the lab - good job he didn't fall over if he was meant to reach Judith first! The perils of live TV!

As for Doctor Who, well my kids and I love it. We like Christopher Ecclestone as the Doctor, and we are enjoying the stories. Ok it's not 'scary', as it was when I was a kid...but back then our expectations were different. These days with computer games etc, most children are not as easily freaked out as I was, lol! We're really looking forward to seeing what David Tennant will do with the role of the Doctor, too.

It was a live production, so unless it's released by the BBC (unlikely) then you probably won't!

reply

Just to mention, Quatermass will be coming out on DVD, and apparently David Tennant's recorded some commentary for the 'special features'.

He has already been in Doctor Who several times, at least in the Big Finish audio plays, and as you say, he is a fan of the series.

I await the approach of David Tennant as Doctor Who and would like to say one thing: *beep* hell, ABC hurry up and get broadcasting rights!

Oh yeah and I reckon Tennant great in everything I've seen him in and he'll be a brilliant Doctor...

reply

I know this is a little, well a lot late, what with the new series of Doctor Who already three weeks into its run over here, but for those of you not lucky enough to have seen it yet, David Tennant is (to quote the ninth Doctor)"fantastic!" He seems born to play the part. You get the best of both worlds, the easy going wit, charm, and, dare I say it, downright sex appeal of Giacamo Cassanova plus the intelligence, sincerity and logic of Dr Gordan Briscoe. Not to mention a darkness of the Doctor's and an energy that is uniquely Tennant's own. Christopher Eccleston was great, but I think Tennant may just eclipse him.

reply

I agree, I loved Chris Eccleston as Dr Who but I think David is even better, not to mention better looking. I haven't seen Casanova yet but I have just watched Quatermass on dvd and I really enjoyed it.

reply

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE David Tennant as the Doctor, but I don't think he will ever eclipse Eccleston. He is AS good, different, but not better. Christopher Eccleston was sooo much better at being the "tortured time lord," he was much darker. David Tennant brought back a levity to the show, and his scene in Doomsday was heart wrenching, but I still think Christopher Eccleston was a better "agnsty" doctor. Although David Tennant is without a doubt a better "happy" doctor.

reply

I've seen several of the Tennant episodes and I have to say it's some of the best sci-fi television I've ever seen! 'Girl in the Fireplace' and the Cybermen episodes were top notch.

reply

We haven't seen "Quatermass" here on tv in Australia so I bought a dvd from ebay.
DT is fabulous in it,so energetic and I so agree tht his live acting is brilliant!!!! Plus, he is utterly gorgeous in the commentary the 'Making of' interviews..........Comes across as intelligent, well informed, EXTREMely charismatic and yet down to earth, plus having the most unexpectedly infectious giggle/laugh!!!
A delight. I could listen to him saying him how he felt "poo-erly" all day LOL {He had flu when rehearsals began - seems like he had never been or felt so sick in his life before. Mentions it several times :) }

reply

Case closed - He is doing a brilliant job !

David was born to play the Doctor.

Actually, when Quatermass was broadcast, it was the week after David had been anounced as the next Doctor, and in his first scene, the script was supposed to have had Prof. Quatermass saying "It's good to have you back, Gordon", but he said "It's good to have you back, Doctor" just so he could be first to say it!
