Live on BBC4

Great TV considering it was live. A couple of fluffs, but on the whole very good tv. British sci-fi at its best.

Yes, it was quite fascinating. Though the plotline is perhaps fundamentally outmoded, I think they did a pretty god job considering it was all live. I haven't seen the original, mind. Did you get to see the cactus dude in the original? any idea as to why it finished 20 mins early?

reply

Apparently all you see of the cactus person is the hands right at the end of the original. The hands that were shown in the original were the actual Quatermass authors.......Nigel Kneale

I think it finished 20 minutes early, due to it being live.......as they had to keep the pace of the show going, when they thought that some scenes may dry up, they decided to just carry on???? Maybe, even though it looked good, some of the actors might have missed out large sections of dialogue or just improvised.......whatever it was, it was decent.

Did you see the bit when Dave Tennant nearly slipped and fell over, when he heard the scream from the lab.

Then fullalove....Bryan from teachers.......became a bit unstuck with his lines when he was chatting to his editor?

Good stuff though......

reply

yes...I quite enjoyed the live aspect. Made the whole thing seem a bit more edgy, though it's not really that much different from theatre i suppose.

reply

By the way when Prof. Quatermass was in the UCL? lab with the police guy, the police guy walked off to the left of the screen, then you heard a huge clattering noise, and the rest of the cast just looked over in that direction.....*laughs*.....maybe he tripped over all the mess the cactus man had made earlier, i doubt the noise was part of the script....*laughs*..... the actor that played Quatermass did want to laugh it seemed.....on the whole his performance was good......he kept it together......

First time i have ever seen anything 'Live' like this.....blimey and they used to this quite alot in the old days, unbelievable......alot of gaffs though i guess.

reply

Definitely one to watch again, I didn't spot all of the gaffes but certainly noticed David Tennant almost falling over while running to the lab :-) So good to see a live braodcast especially one this length - the last live show I saw was The Bill and I think that was one hour only (minus ads of course).

Thought Jason Flemying made a superb Prof. Quatermass, especially the climactic scene. David Tennant was great (as always!) - I guess it must help a little if you're well used to live theatre too :-)

All in all a great show and how good to see great SF back on the TV - and British made to boot.

I agree. Considering the extent to which much of the audience must have been visualising Quatermass as either Tate or Keir, i think he did a remarkable job of creating a believable, younger, Quatermass.

reply

Self- indulgent crap. Oh luvvies we are so brave doing something live - even if it is so second rate.

"I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the *beep* in"

reply

What the 4canal are you on about. They made a new adaption of a British sci-fi masterpiece which not many people would have heard of. The first time it was broadcast LIVE was back in 1953, yes ok, it may not be as scary as it was back then to the public. But Quatermass has been the inspiration for many a great sci-fi show over the years......eg X-files.

reply

The influential nature of the original Quatermass is no excuse for this flat production.

"I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the *beep* in"

reply

How do you know that the original was not as flat as this? I mean only two episodes exist of it apparently of the original 6. It may look flat compared to todays standards of horror and fear. But it has always been the story of quatermass that was most chilling, not the actual effects or production costs etc.

I'm glad i saw it anyway......otherwise i would not have really heard of the original.

reply

The original may not be availble, but the sequel Quatermass and the Pit with Andre Morrell is. Although it was made over 50 years ago and the picture is grainy black and white, it still would have knocked seven bells out of this lack lustre modern version.

reply

I'm not saying that this new version was the best ever, i was commenting on the fact that the story has been revived and that it was good to see it live once again.

reply

The bit with Adrian Bower has been edited out of the DVD!!!!! It's outrageous. Does anyone know if the real clip is available anywhere?

reply

Were you watching the same rubbish I watched?

HUGELY disappointing!

British sci-fi died out in the 70's. No-one takes risks (or worse, no-one takes the risk that something might look a little harmlessly cheesey, for fear of losing "CRED")

This didn't even get that far. It tried too hard to be serious and dramatic and failed on almost all counts.

Especially with the filmising look.... YAKK

reply

Laughs.......well without Quatermass it must be said that there may never have been sci fi full stop. Oh well, if you say it was poor then thats your choice.....i watched it because i wanted to know what all the fuss was about......maybe they should have made it as a real programme and not live.....oh well.....

reply

I think it benefitted from being live in terms of communicating the tension and urgency of the plot.

Elliott Smith seems like a mess to me.

OOOK that was weird - this thread started out all 'how wonderful was that?' and ended up 'how rubbish was that?' I liked the bits I watched - I thought the live aspect really added to all the suspense - it was like watching theatre, you wanted them to get it all right, and were nervous for them, but at the same time it was reaaaaly funny when David Tennant came skidding round the corner and nearly went flying off the set.

I'd rather be happy than right, any day - Slartibartfast

I can't see the point of filming live what can be done with takes to iron out the rough bits. It was fine in 1953 when there was little or no recorded tv

I know its not the same but the live Will And Grace episodes where a bit crap as it gets underneath the characters when there is a fluff of lines or something
