Has Garth Ennis commented on this movie?

His reaction? Any links to interviews?

Having read his whole MAX Punisher Arc i bet hed be disgusted. Not one single character was done justice by this

reply

...other than Frank himself. And this is the only movie that has come even close to doing that.

Except for the agent killing. Ennis' Frank would have done proper and disciplined recon and preparation and would have made sure no undercover agents were in the operation. I reckon they used that *beep* in order to eke out some emotions from ol' Frank to make the audience realize he's human after all.

Oh and the chandelier. That was completely retarded.

reply

Read all of Ennis's run before the MAX comics. This movie captures those issues perfectly.

The Thomas Jane version doesn't do justice to any version of Frank.

reply

This movie is fun but its poorly made from start to finish.

The 2004 Thomas Jane movie is miles better than this.

reply

The 2004 Punisher is the worst of the 3.

Punisher (2004) isn't even watchable. This is.

Never seen the Dolph Lundgren version, so can't comment on that.

I asked him at the Baltimore comic con a few years ago which movie he preferred/thought was better. war zone or the 2004 movie. he said the 2004 film, but he follow up with a "but that isn't saying much" comment.

when the greatest punisher writer of all time has a "negative" comment about war zone, what else do you need? besides the embarrassing total gross and theatrical run. they should have made a sequel to the 2004 film. punisher war zone is a disgrace. batman & robin looks like a cinematic masterpiece along the lines of the godfather part 2 compared to punisher war zone.

reply

Preacher was the best comic ever, but I wasn't blown away by his Punisher. War Zone was closer to the Punisher than the other one (we all can agree that the Dolph movie was a figment of our imagination)

Would love to see another Blade movie with a Punisher guest star.

Ehh... no. Nope. No, nada, nein.

I'm not even debating about which is a better adaptation. When it comes to being a solid film, the 2004 movie runs laps around this.

Sure, this is a fun enough little throwback to bad, cheesy 80's shoot-'em-ups. But it's not well-made, well-written or even well-acted by any stretch. The 2004 film actually feels like a movie... and a very solidly-built one (if not a bit cliche) at that. This film feels like some sort of arcade game nightmare experiment gone out of control.

This film can't even give us the benefit of decent effects half the time. Everything's weird cartoon-blood and bad CGI that looks like Powerpoint clip-art gone crazy. (Ex. The missile that destroys the parkour guy... My god, that was awful-looking.) And the color-timing is so obnoxious in too many scenes and makes the film look infinitely cheaper than it actually was. It's honestly often hard to look at, and for all the wrong reasons.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

I'm sure his reaction was disgust.

This film was allegedly influenced by Ennis' Punisher MAX run ... which is an amazing read, easily the best Punisher comic ever and one of the best mature-themed superhero comics off all-time.

Ennis and the artists who worked with him clearly poured a lot of themselves into the research for the book.

The fact that the film is just an 80s splatter action movie with poor dialogue, weak characters, a lame plot and shoddy action choreography is insulting to the comic book team whose work they said they based it on.

The only thing they got right was Ray Stevenson as The Punisher ... and they totally squandered him.

IMO, I don't even think it's fair to say this film was based on the Marvel Knights run, like the 2004 version.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

LOL Totally opposite imo. Why should Ennis care about this film, he didn't create The Punisher nor Jigsaw. Preacher is definitely one of the best comics of the 90's, but his Punisher runs are flawed. His Marvel Knights run is goofy and his MAX stories are hit or miss. E.g. The Punisher killing Micro (In the Beginning) is maybe the most stupid thing anyone can come up with. Ennis's take on The Punisher is pretentious and he tried too hard to make him look like a psychopath.

The Punisher (1986) by Steven Grant and Mike Zeck is considered by many as the definitive Punisher story. Punisher: War Zone is far from perfect but it captured the sleazy atmosphere of this book and 80's action films quite well.
