Stevenson is actually a big guy at almost 6'4, Jane isn't even 5'10
any fans of the Max or Marvel Knights comics know that Punisher was a big guy, he really had to be when you think about it

Stevenson is by far the best comic book Punisher. But the movie around him wasn't as good.

Long ago men competed on a show to date a woman who competed on a show to date Flava Flav.
He was always brooding. Exactly how I expect a man who have lost his entire family. I didn't feel in Jane's version that he's carrying that loss because there are times that he appears to be jokey. I never imagine Punisher smiling unless it's a sarcastic smile in the comics.
shareI can just look at a still/poster of Stevenson in this movie and everything about it says Punisher. As great as Bernthal is as the new Punisher, Stevenson should have gotten another chance to play him.

shareStevenson was a ruthless beast, unlike Jane's "likeable" Punisher. Jane had to come on like the second coming of Othello in some contrived setup--all because the filmmakers were apparently afraid to depict him murdering a gangster's wife.
In the opening action sequence of War Zone, Stevenson snaps a mob wife's neck without giving it a second thought.
Not only that, Stevenson managed to be dour while exuding a quiet charisma that Jane was woefully lacking.
Stevenson and Lundgren pretty much exuded the right demeanor for Frank Castle as well as looking physically imposing in the role.
Jane had his moments but I just didn't feel The Punisher with him in the 2004 movie (bad pacing for starters). The fan short "Dirty Laundry" was as close as he's gotten to the actual character.
Jane was actually pretty good as the Punisher--I was surprised that he didn't go on to become a full-time action star, but maybe that isn't what he wanted to be.
