How disturbing is this movie?

I really want to watch it, but admittedly I can't handle excessively violent, gory films. So, what are movies you consider disturbing and how does this one compare to them?

reply

In terms of violence & gore it's really not that bad, in fact it's really rather tame.
It's certainly not a "disturbing" film - but then i'm more used to films such as Cannibal Holocaust, Men Behind The Sun, Martyrs, Snuff102 etc, etc. Or documentaries like Orozco The Embalmer.
Hostel is more along the lines of the Saw movies, but less gory than those.
There's not much here to shock tbh, apart from maybe one scene towards the end of the movie, but even that's not too bad, even in the uncut version.
I'd say you'll be fine!

Completely disagree, the violence in Hostel is way more brutal. Saw is just filled by short torture scenes. Sure there is some gore, but even then it looks way less realistic (and more the franchise goes, worse it gets). Hostel in another hand has few torture scenes, but these scenes are long, and you have the time to enter the psychology of the victims (in the first one, except for Paxton, that wasn't so intense, but in the second one they nailed it). The first time you watch the movie you can actually feel sampathy for him and if you have a hard time to handle horror, you'll start to fear for him. The only Saw movie where I felt kinda the same thing for a character, is the doctor in the first one. And even then they try to go so deep in his personal life with all his flash backs that I almost forgot that he was trapped and will probably die.

A lot of the real "violent stuff" is off camera and mostly implied and built with atmosphere through the use of character expressions and music. With that being said, this movie upon first viewing may be a bit intense during the final act of the movie, but nothing compared to some of the movies that the user above me as listed. Not the best movie ever, but I say give it a go!

Just don't watch it.

reply

Well, I want to watch it. I've never seen an Eli Roth film and this seems like his most interested work

reply

You should watch cabin fever first. Eli roth's first movie and it was pretty good. Hostel is different and good too.

I saw this movie on a dvd.I found a scene "which I won't give a spoiler to"quite traumatizing but I watched the behind the scenes section where the victim was wearing the gory make up,and she was giggling at the camera. To me,that or a blooper reel automatically dissipates any trauma.

reply

Meh, just watch it if you wanna see it. It'll put hair in your chest, so to speak... there are a few sick bits in this that are being glossed over by everyone when really they are violent and disgusting, but they are right that Hostel is a lot more about atmosphere than anything. I'd stay clear of Hostel II, though... not only because it's a bad movie by comparison, but it really overdoes the gore.

By the way, I remember I fainted during the original "I Spit On Your Grave" due to a gruesome death scene. Nothing in the Hostel/Saw films even came as close to making me feel as queasy as I did in that one.

reply

There were one one or two deaths in I spit on your grave that still makes me squimish. The bath tub scene in particular... Ugh

reply

The only thing disturbing is that Quentin Tarantino produced something so boring.

reply

30 min of the movie is disturbing, and if you are obsessive/complusive and hate torture porn, look away at that particular segment.
