Ralph + Marlyn... what's the deal?

*Contains some minor spoilers*

I enjoyed this and found it very compelling. Being a fan of D&D and roleplaying games I figured I needed to check this one out, not expecting it to be as good as it turned out.

I cared about the characters in this, mainly Ralph and Marlyn. The ending left me feeling unsatisfied because there wasn't any "resolution" or closure between Ralph and Marlyn. She seemed interested in him at first (the little kiss they had; the scene where she shows him her tattoo and then she cuts off the lights in the closet together [wonder what happened?] and she seemed jealous when she saw Ralph and the female classmate he was with in the hall in that one scene). All pointed toward a fledgling romance in the works. When Lennie(sp) entered the scene, she then seemingly became interested in him, probably because he was the "alpha male." At that point she seemed to lose interest in Ralph. The scene where Lennie wants to take a walk and she says no, and then Ralph says no, then suddenly she wanted to walk alone with Lennie? LOL Damn! Talk about being dissed.

Then there is the whole throwdown scene... but, it wan't fulfilling to me and I wanted more closure or some kind of understanding between the two of them. Did they just remain friends (because she was there in the end at his university hearing)? And then he stayed friends with Lennie too which was interesting.

Anyway, was anyone else frustrated by the ending and the lack of a resolution between Ralph and Maryln?

I think they just stayed friends because a deleted scene shows Ralph bringing the female classmate (probably as his new girlfriend) into the role-playing game. This scene seemed like a much better ending than the abrupt ending with Ralph and Lennie talking on the street.

I think also they wanted to leave it open for the viewer to decide. I dunno, I kind of like those open endings where you're not sure what happens and are free to make up your own resolution. It lends it kind of a realism instead of tying everything up in a neat little bow for the audience. (By the way, I'm not bagging on "Hollywood" endings - I love those too! hehe)

I too would have to agree with you on the fact that there was not really any 'true' closure to what appeared to be a budding relationship between Ralph and Marlyn.

The film overall was much better then I had first anticipated and I also had a rapport with Ralph and Marlyn and to a lesser extent Lennie (I actually found myself loathing him, which means maybe I got into the movie a bit too much, lol).

Either way it was entertaining and I am glad I gave it a shot. However, yes, it would have been nice to have some more blatant closure.

I thought they ended it pretty well, i think the final nail in the coffin between ralph and marlyn may have been when she tried to *beep* kill him because she lost a friggin fictional character. lol

I got the impression that she tried to kill him because she really believed she WAS the character. She lost a persona that she invested a lot of herself in over who knows how many years. Considering the life she described having growing up, her character was her "happy place".

I too was a little disappointed with the ending. I really wanted Ralph, Marlyn, and Lennie to sit down and logically solve the problem they were having. However, I think the way it did end, does show in a way how socially stunted the group was.

It would have been nice if they could have incorporated the alternate ending, as it was refreshing to see that they all got together again at the end(and Ralph bringing a new girl). Did anyone else notice Marlyn's disappointment when Julie(the new girl) said she would play a human and not an elf?

I liked the filme, despite what I would consider technical problems with the DVD(I think the PAL to NTSC conversion wasn't done properly, as there were problems with frame blurring when there was a lot of movement or camera panning). Anyone else have that problem while watching it?

Haha, yeah. Anyone else have MAZES & MONSTERS flashbacks while watching some of her scenes? I'm just glad she didn't disappear in search of the "Towers." ;)

Bigtime. Basically any time there was movement, it jittered. And this on a DVD player that supposedly handles PAL2NTSC conversion, so it would have been better for me if they hadn't even bothered and just rented out the PAL copy!

Ralph talking with the wizards gave me flashbacks of Mazes and Monsters.

Haha, dude, Mazes & Monsters rules. I got a review for it up on Ironic Consumer. You haven't lived until you have seen the clip of the "Sherlock face".
