Other fantasy movie using Shadow play technique

Any help is appreciated. . .

Can anyone remember the name of a fantasy film that used the shadowplay technique to represent the journey of the characters (maybe children) from an underground realm through to the real world??

I can't remember any other details and a few Google searches haven't yielded anything.

I think it might be the Australian movie The Navigator in which a group of people inc kids if memory serves me correctly journey through the earth from plague stricken medieval Europe to modern day Australia. They didn't use shadowplay exactly but it was similar type of old school matte painting cross section vibe for the underground travel - hope this helps !
