B/c young, HIV+ black women prostitutes were/are indeed commonplace in that environment. The movie focused primarily on the diamond smuggling, arms trade and civil war but IMHO the filmmaker's decision to include that brief bit about the prostitute was a momentary nod toward to the HIV/AIDs problem in that region. I'm not sure what the statistics are nowadays but 10-yrs ago when I was working there, the infection rate was about 25-30%.
