FYC: Jason Butler Harner in Changeling - Best Supporting Actor Oscar

Just agreeing with you. this woman's performance is blowing me away. It's one of the greats of all time, with Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia, Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, etc. Just legendary. Does not compare with 98% of what we see.

of course, it is a larger than life role.

reply

Clark Gable didn't show 1/100th of the range and physical changes this woman did. To compare him to her is an insult.

Sunshine-Best Sci-Fi movie since Alien.

Marion Cotillard is an amazing actress. She gave a breathtaking performance!

Absolutely stunning, she deserved every bit of that Oscar.

I was floored by her performance, so gripping and moving.

Definitely on my top 10 list. Heck, top 5..

I agree.
It was an amazing film with an amazing performance by Marion Cotillard.
There is much debate about editing, but I think the end result made the case for the finished product.
It was one of the most unforgettable films I have ever seen.
Magnificent!

Marion Cotillard's performance alone keeps me entraced during this movie, and if her performance had not been as amazing, I might've liked the movie less.

The movie itself doesn't really stand on its own; it is very inconsistent to me, but her performance was enough for me to buy the movie and I would say that she elevated the movie to a Top 10 of 2007 level.

One of the greatest performances of all time and without a doubt, the greatest performance of the past two decades, or at least this decade so far.

agreed, and you know--I was picturing the film in my mind when I read your post.
You're right about it being inconsistent--perhaps, I'm thinking now--it was a reflection (director's intention) of showing the stark inconsistencies in her life. we go from her childhood in her Gran's brothel--to her success to something else--to her blindness as a child--then lurched into another thing.
as if to show her life as her own memory.
don't know, could be me--getting fancy here, but it was a thought.

How peculiar.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

Marion Coutillard's performance is simply staggering. She must have channeled Piaf's soul and/or her spirit. For a while I felt almost like a voyeur, secretly spying on Piaf as if I were a fly on her walls. I got over that part but not the feeling that Piaf was either on the screen or in the room. For many years, when someone asked me about my all-time favorite performance I always said, "Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull. After my viewing La Vie En Rose I can only say I am not so sure anymore.

Cotillard portrayed Piaf as a teen all the way to her dying day. No part of her life was done less perfectly than any other, She was the beautiful teenager with the biggest, most expressive eyes I've ever seen. She was Piaf toward the end of her life, her body having been terrorized by her incessant drinking and morphine use, her back terribly deformed by osteoperosis and still being able to deliver a performance that dazzled the sellout house at the Olympia.

The portrayal of Piaf is all the more amazing when you consider Coutillard is 11 inches taller than Piaf.

As you are, I was. As I am, you will be.

I just watched the film for the first time yesterday, and I've yet to get over it. The final scene, with Edith dying in her bed, mixed with memories & the singing of 'Non, je ne regrette rien' will live with me forever. I don't normally cry at scenes in films but I did on this occasion, such was its emotional power, & delivery. An absolute masterpiece yet again by the French. How do they do it?
