'My life may be incomplete with you....'

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on a line Dev gives to Maya at the end of the movie, when he's kneeling down in front of her and says, "My life may be incomplete with you, but at least it will be a life." What do you think he meant by that? Because I'm really not sure...the person I watched it with suggested that he meant that he wouldn't have a "complete" life with her in the traditional sense of having children, a big family, etc--since for one thing she can't have children. But I'm not sure he was even thinking of that when he said it...I just felt like it was kind of a downer-type thing for him to say, on top of his "Will you share my punishment with me?"--but I have to admit that I don't think I understood it. Thoughts, anyone?
Cheers,
Emily
P.S.-Also, I really loved this movie. :)

"Will you share my punishment with me?"

The fact that he has lost his career, his ego is shattered, he sees life as a punishment. Part of it may also be that due to his infidelity with Maya he lost his son and he has to bear that punishment too.

"My life may be incomplete with you, but at least it will be a life."

I did not think it had anything to do with her inability to have kids - but rather the fact that these were both broken human beings who could only be complete with each other.

It was a most cynical but also sad declaration of love!

Rani, I agree, I think he has been through too much in his life, so he doesn't have the "rosy" romantic dreams anymore. But at the same time I think he realises that the romantic dream is not what married life will be. It will be full of ups and downs and he WANTS to share them ALL with her. So in a way it's actually quite romantic...

I like what you said "sad declaration of love".

Me too actually. I hadn't visited this board for a while and I haven't seen the film for a while but after I visited here a few days ago, I started thinking that I want to see it again... Maybe I'll see it this weekend...

That they might not be able to fully love each other, either because of the people they are or because of the guilt, or have a normal marriage but at least they will be able to live their lives the way they want to with each other

Ashmi any question
