The Ending

Okay, I actually loved the movie up until the ending. I thought that it would end more like the Closet does, where the guy finally gets someone that he deserves and dumps the bitchy former attachment. While I am happy for Elena that she has realized what her ex-lover was doing and leaves him, I didn't like that Francios doesn't end up with Elena but rather with the former girl friend who said that he was like her brother, harmless and aggravating and that she didn't want to see him ever again (it isn't until Elena walks in that she even wants him). I know that Elena is miles out of his league, but this is a movie. It seemed like the entire movie was leading up to it and then it didn't happen. Does anyone agree with me on this because as far as I'm concerned Emilee can end up with the cell phone guy for all I care (and yes I do know that he is with her shop employee).

I agree; I didn't have any sympathy with the Emile character. It seems she wasn't really interested until she thought someone else wanted him. And I didn't feel there was proper closure for the Elena character with whom I did feel some sympathy. The movie had some funny moments, no doubt, but I wouldn't say it was well balanced.

I must disagree. Some great love stories show a friendship that develops into passion. When does either person realize the other is not a platonic friend, but the person they want to spend the rest of their life with? What is the catalyst for that realization. When someone else wants your platonic friend, or you think someone else does, it forces you to examine the attractive qualities. While they showed none of that in this film, that's what I imagined was going on in Emilie's head.
In MY opinion, had Francois ended up with the supermodel, that would have been boringly predictible (because I assumed that would be the ending when I read to brief synopsis) and I would have wanted to throw my popcorn box at the screen.
I do agree that Emilie wasn't all that sympathetic. We didn't get to see enough of her character to root for her. Along the same lines, although I was thrilled the film was only 11/2 hrs., I do feel we were cheated out of seeing something good happen for Elena. She was the secondary focus of the film and we got no resolution for her.

I actually liked how Francois and Elena ended up. I thought their friendship was sweet. It was cool when Francois showed up at the end in her denfense. I love friends like that.

I'm human and I need to be loved.

Elena brought the money to Emilie when she showed up at the bookstore to talk to her about what was happening with Francois. She got the money to clear her debt, realised her true feelings for Francois, and we got something of a happy ending.

A "really sweet" ending is NOT French. Maybe the Hallmark channel will get a chance at the remake and satisy your sweet tooth.

I thought that the second model that showed up and gave Francois her number was going to end up with Richard or Richard was going to end up hooking up with somebody

Well, judging by the way most movies played out, I knew he'd get back with Emilee because he was crazy in love with her.

However, I was kinda let down by how easily she goes back to him. I mean, if I asked a woman to marry me and she said no I'm like her brother, then she gets upset when she sees me with a much hotter, more famous woman and NOW she wants to hook up with me, I'd be worried. It'd be like if he suddenly came into millions of dollars and then she decided she want to be with him. I'd have to ask myself could I really be in love with someone that shallow?

There should've been more of an effort on Emilie's part to "steal" Pignon away from Elena. I also think it'd have been funny if the Kristen Scott Thomas character hooked up with the lawyer, but that's just me .

It bothered me, too, that he got with Emilie at the end. She seemed like a snotty b*tch throughout the entire movie and her rejection of the proposal made it perfectly clear that she had ZERO romantic interest in Francois.

I don't think he should have been with Elena instead, but I do think it would have been good if he found a girlfriend that was neither woman by the end.

However, the ending was very French. If the movie had been American, he'd have been with Elena in the end. It's just the way different cultures do movies.

The Valet was a great French comedy that I enjoyed very much.

The ending was totally French. The fact that Francois was aloof to Elena
made the story more entertaining and unpredictable.

Loved this movie! It was adorable. Although I do wish poor Richard would of ended up with someone. I loved his character lol. I didn't think Francois should of ended up with Elena. Their friendship was sweet and I didn't sense any passion undertones. I think Emilee realized she loved Francois more than she thought when someone else wanted him. Hasn't anyone ever experienced that? I know I have. You don't realize what you have until it's gone. I do think she should have done some groveling though. It was too easy for her.

Just finished watching it and I think the ending was perfect.
It would not have seen right to have him end up with the supermodel.

What can I say? People are complicated.

I agree, but their situation of a "fake couple" wasn't right from the first moment and Emilie was a shallow person, I believe he should have lost the money and she still wanting to love him, that would have shown she actually did LOVE him.

but hey he is the idiot for marrying her not me =)

I wasn't satisfied by the ending either, but then again I'm used to my all-Alerican happy endings and I need to sort of grow out of that to be able to enjoy the other kinds of movies out there.

** Spoiler Warning **

I didn't like the ending either. Emilie is a b***h. She's not very nice. Pignon is a good guy and could have done better. Elena is admittedly out of his league because he's just an ordinary guy, but she was nice to him and seemed to like him a little bit. I think Pignon should have ditched Emilie and made a play for Elena. If that didn't work, he's still better off being single than being with Emilie, but apparently he was happy to settle for her.

I wished they could be together too. But the ending was very realistic, it's probably what would happen in real life. American audience is spoiled by hollywood movies that always have happy endings. It's good to see something different.

reply

yeah, it was actually realistic... emilies behavior is not uncommon at all

I wanted François to end up with Elena, but I liked the movie nonetheless.

The ending did not have to be happy, but it did need an ending. The one we got was like they ran out of money. Did he get divorced? Did they get married? Did she stop drinking? Did she really want to marry her brother?

Great movie until the end.

Marion Cotillard, Keira Knightley and Rie Rasmussen are the most beautiful women on Earth.

reply

Agreed. I was surprised it ended with Levasseur with a transvestite hooker and getting tabloid photos taken. I guess it's full circle but it was abrupt. Maybe some wedding photos in the end credits would've been better.

I thought it would be Valet and Supermodel fall in love but when they kept going back to Emilie then I saw that's where it would go. I don't have a problem with that entirely but I would've liked to have had a scene where we learn that Emilie really was in love with Francois and not just jealous. Having Elena tell her and then Emilie and Francois kiss next scene isn't enough.
