anachronism?

The film is set in 1999 and yet a couple of characters appear to have cell phones. 20 years ago, the average North American didn't have a cell phone (nevermind text messaging) and yet these teens in a Romanian village not only have them but are sexting with them??

1999 was 20 years ago? I think you'd better check your math. and it's not that impossible that they could have had cell phones back then. I've had a cell phone since I was 12,which was 2002. and my parents had one since 2000.

I had a cell phone in 1999, and I was in high school. I have quite a few friends living in eastern europe, and most of them had cell phones. They like to complain about not having enough money for anything, yet they all have laptops, digital cameras, and cell phones.

I was born in Hungary, but I live in the USA. In 1999, I was already living in the states.

Unlike previous technology cell/mobile phones spread to lower income countries very quickly. At the same time it was slow to take off in the US compared to Europe, so them having mobiles is not too surprising.

I remember cell phones being aroun in 1999 as well

The cellphone that the station hand uses to warn about the train's arrival looks to me like a Motorola MicroTAC with an extra large battery. I got mine in 1995.

My first cell phone was in 1997. Based on your incorrect math, you're likely thinking about 1991. Either way, there is NO cellphone anachronism in a film set in 1999.
