Did anyone else think this film was horrendously bad?

Did anyone else think this film was horrendously bad? I absolutely despised this movie. It was too long and there was nothing really good about it. How this even got a best picture nomination is beyond me. Does anyone else agree?

reply

No i don't agree, Babel is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

reply

No neither do I. I thought that it was very thought provoking, very good and a refreshing change.

reply

I totally agree watching this movie was painful

reply

It was quite painful to watch in a way, but it wasn't a bad film. It was painful in the way when you feel bad for the people that your watching.

reply

No I didn't feel it was Horrendously bad, nor was oustandingly good.
It was thought provoking, with some memorable scenes. Also some that made me sit and scratch my head a bit.
All in all I would have to say I would recommend it.

reply

No, I didn't think it was horrendously bad, I thought it was wonderful. So fascinating.

Maturity. The very staple of the IMDb message boards.

reply

I enjoyed it. I saw it for a second time over the weekend. Well written and directed. A movie I wasn't in a hurry to see during it's release but now that I've seen it I wonder why I waited so long.

reply

I can not understand how anyone could not like this film as it is brillant and refreshing. One of my favorite movies of all time.

reply

Not only is not a bad movie, It was probably the best movie of that year (only Pan's Labyrinth & Lives of others could match it)...
And i believe it to be a far superior movie to Departed (which was essentially a rip-off of Infernal Affairs)...
Seriously, the oscars lost a good deal of credibility in declaring Departed above Babel (Babel had won the Golden Globe best picture)....They could've given Scorsese the best Director (as a tribute to his great career) but surely Babel deserved best Picture.
I really dont understand the hate behind this movie. Dont get me wrong, but i feel a majority of the hatred comes from USA because they havent been depicted in the best of ways in the movie.

reply

(which was essentially a rip-off of Infernal Affairs)

Lol!!!

It's called a remake. It's a remake of Infernal Affairs.

They acquired the rights to do a remake of Infernal Affairs.

reply

i didn't like this movie either. but that doesn't mean it wasn't well made. the acting wasn't bad either.

but it was too long, obvious, annoying, i can go on but it's not worth it.

i would not recommend it.

reply

I also thought it was absolutely horrible, it actually pissed me off at how bad it was.

I understand watching a movie and how one feels about it can be very subjective, but to say this movie was horrendous is just ridiculous.

First, I wonder about your age although there are plenty of people of all ages that are not very mature or intelligent to understand
and enjoy a movie of this nature.

Secondly, if you are going to say you felt something was horrendous, you should always make sure you back your statement up with specific reasons why.

So, I'd love to know exactly why you felt this film was horrendous.

reply

Age?? your'e funny, how silly a remark because someone did not like the movie,(and agree with you) So I wonder about your age?

reply

"Babel" is easily the worst movie I've ever seen, and I've seen some crap ("Epic Movie," "Meet the Spartans," both were miles better than this stinker).

It wasn't thought-provoking at all, unless you're talking about how it provoked the thought "WHY the #@!$ are these characters doing such idiotic things?" None of the actions of the characters in the movie made any sense. None of the plot lines went anywhere interesting. I don't see how I'm supposed to give a crap about the characters in this movie when they make such dumb decisions.

This movie WAS painful to watch. It was painfully stupid, as in, my head began to hurt from yelling at my TV every time a character did something absolutely retarded (which happens on average about every 8 minutes). If you look at the IMDB message board for this movie, there's a bunch of "Why did this happen" threads. That's because the movie doesn't make any sense.

My wife couldn't take it after about 30 minutes, but I couldn't stop watching. I sat through the whole thing because I didn't believe it could possibly maintain such a high level of mediocrity throughout the whole movie. I was wrong.

reply

You gave very general and vague arguments as to why, specifically, you felt characters were doing "dumb" things.
I'd love to know what things you would consider "dumb" that these characters did.

If "Babel" is the worst movie you have ever seen then you either really have high expectations or it's just to deep for your intelligence level.
And to compare "Meet the Spartans" just shows that you are not a good judge of interesting, thought provoking, compelling story telling.
"Meet the Spartans" is simply a spoof. It doesn't take any intelligence to write a script such as "Meet the Spartans".

;)

reply

I wasn't comparing the movie to "Meet the Spartans" other than to illustrate that a piece of garbage like that was easier to sit through than the drivel that is "Babel."

It's rather pointless for me to list all the dumb things that the characters did in the movie, because all of their actions were stupid. I would literally have to list everything that happened in the movie to chronicle all the stupidity, like the father giving a gun to his kids and letting them use it unsupervised, or the kids then deciding to shoot at a bus full of people.

I think it's funny you reason that my expectations might be too high, seeing that I stated that "Meet the Spartans" was a better movie. "Babel" got an Oscar nomination, didn't it? I heard several people talking about what a great movie it was before I rented it. My expectations were high, but "Babel" didn't suck because it didn't meet my expectations, it just plain sucked. Period.

The script was terrible. The events that occurred in the movie and the way that the characters reacted to it were ridiculous. The movie is clearly not thought-provoking, as it would take a moron to buy into such ridiculousness in the first place. Sorry, but the fact is that if you like "Babel," you like a terrible movie.

reply

Sorry, but the fact is that if you like "Babel," you like a terrible movie.

I like how you state personal opinion as fact. You're funny, I'll give you that.

We call this the Loom of Fate.

reply

Yeah, this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only storyline that I cared about in the slightest was the Mexican border patrol. This was the slowest paced movie I have ever seen in my life. Each and every scene was drawn out so long!!!! When they would cut from Morocco and go to Japan they would insert like 2 minutes of scenery and music between each transition. Pitt and Blanchette's storyline was one of the most boring things I have ever witnessed. You know your storyline is bad when the climax is you taking a piss. I never give up on a movie, but boy did this suck. The storylines were boring. The people were stupid and I hated pretty much all the characters except the maid and the little American kids. It was so pretentious and self abosorbed that it almsot dares you not to like it. I hate hate hated the Japanese girl too I really wanted her to jump off the building in the end.

Blah this movie frustrates me!

Babel is the kind of movie that polarizes viewers...probably not the kind most American audiences are used to. It either works for you or it doesn't (if it doesn't, go back to your Tarantino or Spielberg or Transformers). The movie is a good one, at least to me, because it at least tries to say something intelligible about the current state of world society, although much of it is rather pessimistic. Will do well in festivals, and probably will continue to be more appreciated by elsewhere (like in Europe) than in US proper.

reply

Ha ha! well said mojorecords! someone got a little burnt!

reply

No the movie is just really bad. Ok the Photography is fine, the actors have talent. The problem is this excuse for a fashion shoot pretends to present depth and be "thought provoking" it is neither.

It is glorifying the idea that everyone in these countries are some how backward and emotionally devoid of intelligence.

Put all these events in America and ask yourselves would you A) believe it B) Not just walk out of the cinema. The film maker uses the cheap trick of foreign language to hide behind what is really a very badly written piece.

You would not enjoy this as a novel. So it is Sh:t

buy the Lego playset for Babel!

reply

How about taking the kids to Mexico, even though Brad Pitt's character explicitly stated on the phone that Rachel would be coming over to take care of them?

My sympathy was minimal for her as it was because taking them across the border and back is completely idiotic, but then that was brought at the end of the film, and any sympathy I might have had was completely eradicated.

Illusions Michael. Tricks are something whores do for money.

reply

EXACTLY!! The scenery was nice though LOL!! I am meaning the desert and mountains, not the weird Japanese girl.

reply

I did. I never felt any connection to the characters or cared about them at all. Consequently, I did not care about the events and the way they were tied together. And because of that, I did not at all buy into the points that the movie was trying to make.

I just never saw why I was supposed to care about these people. Bad things happen every day to countless people all over the world. If a movie wants to make me care about what happens to a character, it is going to have to show me why that character is special and important. I don't have enough neurotransmitters to go around cranking out sadness and empathy for every bad thing that happens. Simply expanding one particular issue and showing me the details (which the media does all the time for types of incidents that happen on a frequent basis; see all the attention given to missing pretty white young women, while ignoring the countless other incidents of missing people) is not going to change that.

reply

"I don't have enough neurotransmitters to go around cranking out sadness and empathy for every bad thing that happens."

Especially when those bad things are the result of monumentally moronic decisions.
