if they were to use a full e-mail address then they would need to own it, in order to do that you need to either create it (and making a half way decent, short and relevant name is neigh-on-impossible), or buy it (which would be expensive if the current owner had any sense). Using a username and later declaring that she was searching for the @ button and her pressing it was cut for time constraint reasons is a far more cost effective method.
