How do I save???

Okay, so I saved my game at that little shrine thing after killing the Oni towards the beginning. Then I went across the bridge, fought the masked guards, went through the portal to the Wu Shi Academy. I fought my way through the Wu Shi Academy, and didn't find any shrines with which to save my game. I figured one would be in the next area, so I proceeded on to the castle where you have to help Johnny Cage. No shrines. So I helped him close the gate, and I got to the part where you need to go to the armory to grab a sword and dump the boiling oil on the Takartans, or something. Am I to understand that I have to do all of this on one attempt? There's no way to save my game once I at least get to the Wu Shi Academy? I keep re-playing this part of the game, and I keep getting killed, and the fact that I can't save is driving me crazy. Am I missing something, or are the programmers for this game just *beep*

You have to put the fire out by doing a test your might thing I think you encounter five of those then after beating the two masked guards or at least get passed them there is another save icon.

The only save icon I remember in the Wu Shi Academy is right before you venture into the Outworld portal. It's kinda long so try to stay alive.
