What happened to the dog?

He gives her the dog as a puppy and then you don't see it again until the end. It is on the bed with them in her apartment and is grown up. Then they are at the airport and she is leaving for LA? What is going to happen to that dog? I hate when movies introduce a pet like they think, "oh a puppy, cat or whatever would be cute" and then the animal is just like some prop that doesn't get integrated into the story.
