What was the point of this film?!

Been wondering this for a while. The film doesn't communicate anything to the watcher, apart from a guy's ongoing obsession with his ex. The plot is so confusing and missing crucial bits. There are lots of unanswered questions, which makes the film poorly made and very unrealistic:
- Why was she moving out of town? The 'new boyfriend' was just a rumor.
- What was their jobs? They were all quite wealthy since they afforded cocaine and designer clothes. Perhaps Syd's unemployment caused him depression and allowed him to wallow in self-pity and obsession over his former relationship.
- How did Syd meet Bateman? And why was he so friendly in that he invited Bateman to a private and personal party straight after selling him drugs?
- Why did London sleep with Syd just before her flight since they were broken up and she knew she was going to leave town for a long time?
- Why did they break up in the first place?

The answers to all of your questions are either clearly explained or is simply, "you don't understand". This flick relied more on the viewers having some common ground with the main characters than any I think I've seen. If you haven't been in a long term, passionate, often unhealthily passionate relationship, the entire premise and most of the characters actions and choices make NO sense. But if you've experienced something similar, it's all there.
And then there's the breakup and using drugs and alcohol to deal. If you haven't done it, you won't get it.

The nature of your questions suggest you've never been in love and never purchased drugs before. Both of those things require unique interactions. I'll let you figure out the love part. As for inviting the guy he just bought drugs from...A: trust is required to do do something that will send you both to jail if untrustworthy. B: the particular drug deal you witnessed was not the random sort. He was buying from a friend of a friend/dealer. No real "drug dealing", more like "drug renting"? Or a drug favor.

The main context of the movie, to me at least, seemed to be about how the characters deal with their fears, anxieties, vulnerabilities and inner narratives, how they try to hide and protect themselves and the intensity of pain they feel that drives them to hide and protect themselves in the ways that they do.
