Iowa? Are you kidding me?

Another sports movie in Iowa? Does that thing produce anything else but Corn and baseball movies? I mean come on guys...find a new genre!

Sean Astin is in another sports movie as well. Are they gonna carry him off through the cornfields in this one too?

I'm surprised Kevin Costner isn't involved.

Soybeans. Duh.

I am from Norway where the movie takes place and if you know the story of the movie, it's an AMAZING story ... a TRUE story none the less. And if another state could come up with the amazing baseball players we've had, then maybe Iowa wouldn't have to produce all the good baseball stories.

And Sean is an amazingly nice man; hardworking but fun all at the same time. And no, there is no carrying anyone off in cornfields. Watch the movie, learn about the story ... but you do love Christian Bale, which says enough right there. :)

Good baseball players from iowa?

Um no

reply

Why don't you check out stats on how many people from Norway Iowa (a 4 block long town, seriously, I'm from there, no joke) have made it to the majors? Then you can say what you want, but I guarantee no other town this small has had as many players make it as we have.

reply

Maybe not a lot of pro caliber talent coming out of there but baseball is a team sport. I'd rather have 9 players who play well together than 1 or 2 players who are great with 7 others who don't get along.

Beef, Bacon, Corn (a portion of which was fed to your last steak/big mac), Gasoline, and we have a General Mills and a Quaker Oats which both produce a large amount of the cereals sold in most grocery stores. There was also a president and several actors... Ashton Kutcher, Elijah Wood...Ron Livingston... oh yeah, and 2 baseball movies ;-)

You pose a great question: What DOES Iowa produce besides corn and baseball movies?

We produced Ashton Kutcher, Tom Arnold, and Elijah Wood (sorry about those).

We gave you President of the United States Herbert Hoover, John Wayne, Peanut butter.

We gave you Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off of a bat.

Those strange kids with the black armbands you learn about in junior high history class.

We brought you "The FLOOD of '93."

Slipknot.

The Iowa State Fair.

Ron Burgandy.

T-boz from TLC.

Phyllis from the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Grant Wood and his painting American Gothic

Johnny Carson of the Tonight Show.

We supplied the 49 states with the optional slogan, "Hey, at least we're not Iowa."

Well, I can report that it least one other film from Iowa rests in a different genre, and takes a different subject as its inspiration. In a blatant little piece of self-promotion, I'll point out that our film, "Haunting Villisca," is inspired by the infamous unsolved axe-murders of eight people in tiny Villisca, Iowa in 1912.

Moreover, that same case was the subject of yet another film, a documentary entitled "Villisca: Living with a Mystery," which has garnered significant praise as it has played the festival circuit.

Also, another Iowa independent film, "Indelible," is currently making the festival rounds and it has nothing to do with baseball.

But maybe independent films just aren't your cup of tea. In that case, I'll gently suggest that perhaps you've forgotten a little ditty called "The Bridges of Madison County," which only happened to involve two of the industry's (and history's) finest in Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. I don't remember a single crack of the bat in that one either.

The state legislature just passed a tasty tax incentive bill that should make it easier to shoot movies here so just keep your eyes (and perhaps your mind) open and maybe you'll see something surprising. While baseball may be a grand cinematic subject, it isn't the ONLY subject and everyone knows that.

But you know what? "The Final Season" is terrific; I've seen it. Strong performances, tightly cut, a genuine, open-hearted crowd-pleaser. Why is another fine baseball picture such a bad thing?

Oh well. Thanks for noticing us, anyhow.

reply

sorry but i think anyone with "jedi master" for a name has no room to make fun of anyone or anything else. especially a state like iowa which supplies most of the food you eat.

reply

Your also forgetting that Children of the Corn was taped in Iowa. And also that Blue Bunny Ice cream is made there. Also for famous people the guy that created Veggie Tales grew up in Iowa too.

reply

Hahahahaha! i live in iowa and its not what you think ppl think its all cornfields and stuff but the truth is theres A LOT in iowa there are MANY MANY parts where its the city. Plus we have the second largest mall=D

reply

We do? Where? It's not in Des Moines or Sioux City. We do have the largest truck stop in the world though.

reply

Second largest mall? I've never heard that before. But Iowa does have a lot of things to offer. Maybe not what someone from the coast is looking for, but there is plenty.

And out of the list of what Iowa offers, suprised nobody listed Maytag Appliances.

I lived in Newton for 20years and just moved to Florida last November, but to me Maytag appliances were one of the biggest things to come out of Iowa. Or I should say WAS.

Haha..I forgot about John Deere. Living in Florida its been so long since I've even seen a tractor.

But yeah definately John Deere and Maytag two of the most known things to come out of Iowa.

Add Vermeer and Pella Windows to the list. Pella also has Tulip Time which people from all over the country attend. We are one of two states I believe that still play baseball in the summer(which is silly I think)our highest level of professional sport is the Iowa Cubs(obviously Baseball). Who cares if all we have is corn and baseball(which we have much more than that). Those are two things that make this country great. Where would we be without corn? You would see a completly different food market in this country. I'm not sad that America's pasttime is a huge part of Iowa. Oh yeah, we have had a ton of major league players from Iowa. Especially for how low of a populated state we are. One of them is getting ready to play in the ALCS on Friday.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Rockwell, the head aviations inventors in like the world. Not to mention the Iowa fighter jets that fly clear to D.C. to be Air Force 1's personal guard. We've got a power plant that's 3rd on the list for most popular places for terrorists to bomb as well.

reply

haha how could i forget my old hometown's (newton) new racetrack. anyone know how its doing? i left just as they were finishing it up.

reply

The Iowa Speedway is doing fine with ARCA, IRL, and even a road race.

Don't forget that Iowa also has Iowa State University home of the first electronic digital computing device (computer), the Atanasoff-Berry Computer.

ISU also has the most advanced full immersion 6 sided virtual reality machine in the world. A sort of bookend on modern technology.

We are also home to Kate Mulgrew and Terry Farrell of Star Trek, Tom Arnold, Michelle Monaghan, Brandon Routh, and composer Meridith Wilson. Baseball players include pitchers Jon Lieber and Mike Myers. Current NFL players include Kurt Warner, Aaron Kampman, Dallas Clark, and Kyle Orton. Apparently also Sarge from Red vs. Blue, but I don't know if that is substantiated.

Mason City, Iowa also manufactures those Kraft JELLO personal pudding and jello packs you are eating. Principal Financial also has its HQ in Des Moines.

so Iowa = cooler than you would think. And waaaay better than Wyoming.;)

Jordan Creek is the second largest mall in America.

We've had a ton of celbs. come and vist it=]

While it doesn't have the second largest mall (that's King of Prussia Mall in Philadelphia, PA) other Iowans peopls have left off the list so far are:

William Buffalo Bill Cody
Simon Estes
George H. Gallup (you know the Gallup Poll)
Ann Landers
Cloris Leachman
Glenn Miller
Donna Reed
Abigail Van Buren
Tom Arnold
Nick Nolte
Jerry Mathers
Mark Twain
Laura Ingals Wilder
Harry Reasoner
The Everly Brothers
Mamie Eisenhower
Wyatt Earp
Ringling Brothers
Henry Wallace
George Washington Carver

Just to name a few others

In addition, Iowa is the current national leader in the production of Corn, Pork, Soybeans, Eggs and Beef. So the next time you sit down for a meal why don't you add Iowa to your list of things to be thankful for.

P.S. I don't live in Iowa but I do see the beauty and the charm of it.
