Why did the principal hate the baseball program?

It seemed like he really was focused on destroying the baseball program more than he was concerned with the merger of the schools. To the point of having a vendetta or something.

There was a comment from the crowd the principal had a grudge against Van Scoyoc because he wouldn't let his son play football in addition to baseball.

This makes no sense at a small-enrollment rural high school. Even in the 1980s/90s very few rural high schools had enough enrollment that any baseball coach could prohibit his players from playing football without totally killing the football team.

At most small rural high schools the star pitcher/ ace shortstop on the baseball team is also the star guard in basketball and the quarterback in football.

But for the purposes of the movie they said Van Scoyoc didn't allow baseball players to play football.
