1. "The Simpsons" has been on the air over 20 years. Even at its worst, it is still better than much of what is on television.
2. You speak of "impact" ... "South Park" would never have aired if not for "The Simpsons" coming along first.
3. "The Simpsons" started as a cult show, but today it is a legitimate phenomenon being appreciated across age groups, geography, etc. "South Park" remains very cultish and very much unchanged.
4. As time went on, "The Simpsons", in a sense changed the country. What was once unacceptable, became accepted. "The Simpsons" won over an audience. As I said, "South Park" remains out on the fringe, and is not anywhere near as influential (on society and on animation) as "The Simpsons".
