how did this get nominated for an Oscar?

Were there no better cartoons this year??

reply

Compared to the last years, this year was rather weak for animation. So it was easier for Puss in Boots to get nominated.

Perhaps they could have chosen movies like Rio and Winnie the Pooh instead.

That's just weak songwriting. You wrote a bad song, Petey.

reply

True, even Rio was better than this, but how about Arthur Christmas and The Adventures of Tintin? They were better than Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2.

And I would have expected The Adventures of Tintin to be nominated, although I haven't seen it yet.

I could imagine that TinTin was not nominated because Spielberg already received a nomination for Warhorse (but I am not sure if that is the thinking of the Academy).

However, TinTin would have been another good and better nominee than Puss in Boots.

Really, you liked Kung Fu Panda 2 that much? I thought even the first one was hit or miss.

You should watch Arthur Christmas. There was one moment I didn't "get" (didn't see how it was supposed to be funny), but other than that it's a wonderful animated film.

reply

Just curious OP. How many of your animated films have been nominated?

reply

What kind of an absurd response is this? I have to be able to make whatever I am criticizing myself??

reply

I can't believe Rango won Best Animated over PIB; Rango bored me to sleep.

reply

Rango is not for everybody, but it did deserve some recognition. It was a subtle parody on Westerns and other Gore Verbinski's films (Pirates of the Caribbean, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) - definitely not for kids, and far not for all adults. There were certain things in it only big movie buffs would have gotten.

reply

I personally didn't really like Rango much since I didn't see the appeal in that movie and I thought that this film was much better since it heart which was something Rango didn't really have.

reply

Well, I certainly wouldn't make a statement that sweeping, but also, in terms of artistic merit these two films are nowhere near in the same league. Oscars are never given for "the most enjoyable experience", and even by that measure Puss in Boots fails almost completely. I thought it was boring and humorless, and it took me three tries to finish watching it.

I loved Gnomeo and Juliet. I think it was in the 2012 oscar time period but it came out in February 2011. I thought it was quite clever and my kids love it along with the music.

Puss and boots was okay but honestly it was humpty and Antonio banderas that made this movie even watchable.

reply

I asked myself the same thing. I had very low standards and I still thought it was terrible. They're not even bothering to make jokes out of their (dated) pop culture references anymore.

Tintin should have been nominated, but I suspect it wasn't due to it being motion captured, rather than hand animated. Cars 2 wasn't very good, yet even it should have been nominated over this, if only for the lush animation and attention to detail.

It's produced by the major animation studio. That's why.
