How old is Sophie *spoiler*

If the Sophie had the baby when she was 18, then what is her age in this movie?

Sarandon is nearly sixty and looks it. Her daughter (Mara) should be close to 40.

reply

It's pretty simple math. The birth certificate says the baby was born in 1975. I'm guessing the movie was made in 2005. Making Mara 30 yrs old not 40. If Sophie was 18 in 1975 and now has a 30 yr old, then she's supposed to be about 48 or 49 if I have my numbers right. I didn't think she looked close to 60 AT ALL. Pretty worn out/exhausted, which I think was the point (she wasn't sleeping and she didn't seem to be wearing makeup really). Although Susan is almost 60 in real life, I had no problem believing her as around 50 instead. I've always found her deceptively youthful. She was supposed to look run down. In that scenee where she "cleans herself up", she definately didn't look like her age.

No problems with math, thanks. It's simply hard to believe that the characters are only twenty years apart. Better casting, make-up, script, etc. might help.

You asked how old she was...I said it was simple math and it is. You didn't have to guess her age if you just did the math lol.

o...k. So you did or didn't know the answer to the question before asking it?

It seems like you missed the point of my original post, but that's OK.

Susan's character carries on the tradition of geriatric celebrities who do not want to act their age. She is in good company. Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, and most recently, Sharon Stone, continue to pursue the celluloid Fountain of Youth by accepting roles which should go to younger actors.

Maybe it is a nod to the old teenage exploitation films which often cast actors in their thirties as high school students. It can't hurt camp value of this film.

Oh ok, why didn't you just say all that instead of asking a question you didn't actually want answered (since it was so easy to figure out). I mean that was the title your thread. Just spout all of that instead of using quotes from nowhere once the question you asked got answered. Start with "casting younger" or "typical hollywood" or something. Not "hey how old was she, cause it wasn't clear, and it doesn't make sense if blah blah blah...no I can do math...'when it rains it pours'...'the lion stalks at night'...you know, my real point is that hollywood has a tendancy to yada yada yada". Either you knew the age or you didn't. If you didn't, I answered that. If you did, fine don't ask. Ramble on this FAR more interesting topic instead of asking the age question like you couldn't figure it out.

Thanks for all the comments, observations and explanations. Sorry if I put you on the wrong track. I came to the message board looking for an explanation for the terrible ending which I found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448564/board/flat/41271739. IMHO, it would have made about as much sense to have everyone get run over by a truck. My comment about Sophie's age was meant to be ironic, not arithmatic. I know this sort of thing sometimes gets lost on the Internet and e-mail.

My wife had the misfortune to sit through the entire movie. I only caught the last twenty minutes but that was much more than enough. We thought Irresistible was a real stinker but it has its defenders, or at least Susan Sarandon does.

Sure, no problem. I know what you mean about lost in translation. I'm always saying something sarcastic on imdb or something, and it just never translates (I keep saying there should be some symbol like with question marks to denote sarcasm/cynicism). Anyway, I'm sorry you and your wife didn't like this movie. I guess it's good you only saw the last 20 minutes though...I didn't particularly like or dislike this movie (I guess closer to the dislike side) after watching the whole thing. But I'm a big fan of SS, and was just glad to see her in a leading role (of course not in America since we're so age obsessed). Hopefully she'll do another movie that you'll like better (don't watch Elizabethtown...that's not it...Igby Goes Down is a few yrs old but a good one).

I have no problem with this. Male movie stars do this all the time. Harrison Ford is about to reprise his Indiana Jones character. Excuse me but that's pretty ridiculous since Indy has a lot of action to perform. And I love Harrison! But he does come off old on screen now.

Susan Sarandon can pass for a woman in her 50's. I think 40's is stretching it. I thought her daughters were too young, however, especially the youngest one.

But I agree, the movie would have been better served by an actress in the age group of Julianne Moore or Meg Ryan for example.

Hi,
Im new to all of this but, in the movie Mara tells Sophie she has a daughter (lie) and that she is 8? Sophie says, "OOH you look so young?" If Mara was 30 then she supposedly had Jessie at the ripe old age of 22? Is that too young to be having kids then? Anyway. Iv only seen little clips so I could be way in over my head here. Im in the Uk and I dont believe its been released here yet if at all it will. Does anyone know if it will or not?

susan sarandon is absolutely beautiful! & i dont think she looks 60 at all, she could pass for 40s easy i think, & i thought she was great in this movie!

reply

I agree that Susan's performance in this movie was top-notch, and I also agree that she doesn't look her age, but I've never thought of her as being "beautiful" or even pretty. Am I the only one that thinks her eyes bug out of her head? I just don't see anything attractive in her facial features. Maybe I'm in the minority on this one?

reply

You either dig SS's look or not. I had a (male) boss who thought Susan Sarandon was the hottest hottie ever. Then I met his wife and she had kind of buggy eyes, too. I figured, that's his thing. To each his own.

I always thought she was more charismatic and attractive than actually beautiful.

Haha, I know right? I was like, so Emily Blunt's supposed to be early twenties, no mid twenties, no thirty. Well that's quite old. Unless... no wait. At least it kept me distracted from the plot.

@campervancrazy: It's finally had a quiet release in the UK on DVD. You can get it in Blockbuster. It honestly isn't worth buying.

reply

She's far too old for the movie to work and to be believable!

reply

Sophie was 49 in the movie.
