I'm confused. I'm seeing bad reaction, yet great reaction. Who's right

Who do I believe? Is the film good, or bad? I'm familiar with the case, so this movie interests me.

The reason there are 2 reactions is because some people expected and probably like it to be gory (in which case, they should just watch Hostel). But this movie isn't that. This movie has much more depth and substance and concentrated more in WHY they did what they did and not HOW they did what they did.

Its scares with psychological horror and stays with you even after it ends, makes you think, better than Hostel and other Gory stuff..

Why so Serious ?

Hmm, you can of course only believe yourself when it comes to the actual experience of the movie but I must say that having seen this only once some time ago I will for sure see it again essentially because of several things which are clear in my experience of it: it was a very well-made movie which do NOT go down the easy way but in fact does the hard thing and that is to tell the story behind the choices made in it which are so difficult to understand for an outsider. The actors are superb, incredibly well-playing and I don't remember a second of not believing their act. The lightning of the movie is another thing which still plays a huge part in my recollection. It is very delicate and spare and therefore enhances the experience of the depressive mood in the movie. I have seldom seen a movie which affected me so deeply emotionally because of its irreversible nature, and I was close to stopping it because it was almost unbearable to go through and that alone is a big quality stamp in my world. I have to see this again to experience new sides of it and I can hardly wait. I would recommend this any day because of its intelligent and sensible way of telling its story. Great movie handling a difficult story brilliantly.

This film has a fairly specific taste, but I personally think it is a great film, the character relations are highly developed and Keri's acting is phenomenal. Plus the gore scenes are very intense, I cringed so many times.

Check out this review by Bloody-Disgusting, they gave it a 9/10:

you should check out the other Fangoria Frightfest 2010 films too!

not your typical slasher flick..like another poster said, this film had depth and substance(NOT keri russell's character) and maybe the reason why people responded negatively to it is that they aren't ready to see this type of mix-up..my guess is,they prefer pseudo-philosophy like the SAW series..rather than try to understand the type of feeling that these two men had..

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.

No, it has nothing to do with wanting or expecting a gorefest of a horror movie. The absurdly unnecessary, pointless, dimwitted parts of the movie focusing on Russels character completely derails what otherwise would be an effectively creepy, unsettling movie. Any attempt at offering something deep and of substance is destroyed the the horrendous, cringeworthy trash of the russel part of the story. It's mind boggling why they decided to even include that stuff in the movie, definition of unnecessary.
