'Cigarette Burns' reminded me of....

This BBC comedy horror from 2005, a very similar story:

It sort of reminds me of "The Ninth Gate" with Johnny Depp. Reedus is searching for this movie while Depp is searching for this book and both of them getting obsessed. 

It's absolutely similar to The Ninth Gate, so much so I'd have to say it was inspired by it

It reminded me of In the Mouth of Madness.

It reminded me of "The Ninth Gate" with Johnny Depp. Crazy collector sends young man on a dangerous quest after a mythical book.

It also reminded me of "8MM", "The Ring" (particularly the 1998 Japanese version), Videodrome (1983) and Carpenter's own "In the Mouth of Madness".
