I disagree with the mockers. The movie works.

Call me stupid or whatever, maybe I enjoyed my film class at UCLA and paid too much attention. Both Johnathon Schaech and Lori Heuring do a very good job of "selling" their characters. Maybe those people who say it is too slow have Attention Deficit Disorder or they were agitated by the nudity and missed the movie. The nudity and sex is explicit but not sordid or trashy like a 45 minute porno full of "outtakes".

The screenplay provides motive. The blackmail can't be disclosed because of the social and political fall out it would cause. The photography, lighting, editing and "momentum" of the film are in sync. The production values are excellent set against the natural beauty of Budapest.

Lori Heuring's acting in the last scene sells the gag. You can see the shock on her face and her illusion crumble by her expression. If you disagree, go look again.

What is everyone complaining about? Do you prefer "Knocked Up" or a National Lampoon movie instead? This is "old school" film-making. We were pleasantly surprised and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a story unfold.

I agree with you. This movie isn't as good as the first one and won't win any Oscars, but if a purpose of a movie is to entertain, then it succeeded. I've enjoyed the movie and Budapest in Winter provides a beautiful setting.

i don't see what's so illegit about this movie. the original 8mm had a very unique subject matter but it wasn't that amazing by any means.

not to offend anyone, but i feel that the direct-to-dvd label is a bit clouding to ppl's judgment. if this movie featured bigger actors and showed up in theaters, you wouldn't call it a B movie. i'm sure we've all noticed how many B movies make it into theaters featuring huge actors (anyone see the latest de niro and pacino movie?). or if it came out of sundance or cannes, then you'd find all these nifty little artsy things you like about it. indies love nudity. i could've easily told you it was an indie and you would've looked at it differently from the get-go.

in my opinion, the films deserves a lot of merit. there was a very unique take on monogamy and sex in the movie that bigger pictures don't really touch upon. also, the thing with the family was great. the plot was simple, sure, but what made this movie a little more interesting than 8mm was that the end didn't culminate in the hero fighting the bad guy to the death (like 8mm with nicolas cage - like every other movie we've ever seen). it went the alternative twist ending route. we've seen that too, sure, but i think it was done pretty well here too.

I agree with DarcCinema. I think people are applying their legitimate skepticism of direct-to-DVD fake sequels to cloud their judgment about the quality of this particular film. I never even saw "the first one" (yes, I realize there is no "first one") and paid $3 for this one not expecting much. It pleasantly surprised me and I do think that if presented in another context such as an art film at a respected festival, it'd be viewed very differently. And while I too figured out the ending early, it wasn't any fault of the film, which was actually very good at misdirection. I also commend the filmmakers for ending when they did rather than including some melodramatic epilogue.

By then I wasn't paying much attention. I had figured out the gag rather early in the movie as soon as the blackmail envelope showed up. David just seemed way too "blah" about everything for it to be real. For me the ending was only about finding out exactly who else was involved.

And the whole premise bothered me right from that early point. In this day and age who really cares that a couple that seems to love each other is having a three-way with a beautiful woman? The blackmail potential is next to nil.

If it were me I'd ask the blackmailers to post it on youtube for me.

I agree, i believe it was actually a good film, the only thing that brings it down is the fact that its titled 8MM 2. It should be a stand alone film like it was originally suppose to be.

I think it's solid as a direct to video late night flick. Aimed more at the Skinemax fan, and it delivers in that regard. Good cast of sexy ladies. And it at least spared us any recreation the cheesy (from 8MM) scene where Nic Cage tries to portray the horror of watching a snuff film.
