She did not need a roommate

Holly looked like she had a comfortable lifestyle and job, buying designer dresses (and even offering to buy one for the new roomie).

Why did the script make it seem like she needed a roommate? I can believe she roomed with Jan in the beginning because they're friends, but she clearly could support herself and got an apartment even if it was smaller.

The script didn't show she was co-dependent either.
