Well Shazam is Officially Heading for some pretty Low Numbers...

Now that the 2nd weekend results are in and we can see Shazam is getting no bump from the supposed "Good WOM" and Instead is kinda just having completely average holds....

Its not hard to figure out where Shazam is heading.

Domestically Shazam Will be lucky to hit 150 Million ....Most likely it will finish between 140 to 150 Million

Overseas is even worse for Shazam....Its Not doing to well in China after a decent opening...

Shazam is now looking at anything between 390 to 420 WW....

A couple of things are clear now...

1. WOM just is no where near what was expected or suggested, Audiences clearly arent liking this movie as much as Critics

2. WB picked a truly terrible release date, Sandwiching Shazam in between 2 MCU films has big as CM and Endgame effectively made Shazam completely forgettable and not feel important...Shazam Literally has 1 more week(of Making very little) before Endgame hits and Shazam is forgotten, whats worse is, because of The Success of Endgame, Its entirely Possible Captain Marvel is going to be playing in more theaters and making more box office in Shazam's 5th weekend than Shazam...

3. At this point, I dont see WB going forward with a sequel to Shazam unless than can bring in another DC character to Be THE DRAW and bring in Audiences ..Its now clear Shazam With Zack In The Lead simply isnt a draw....WBs almost certainly is going to require The Rocks Black Adam to be in the sequel if they are going to go forward....

WBs got to have confidence that a potential sequel could be more successful than This, and there is nothing about Shazam's box office that would give WB any confidence a sequel would even match Shazam's box office....Bringing In The Rock to save the movie and franchise is The Move to make....Its also worth noting WB has done this exact move before...When MOS Under performed, The already Announced and Greenlit "MOS2" quickly turned to Batman to come in and save the franchise and to bump Box office .

4. It appears WB/DC literally gained NO Goodwill or trust from Aquaman.....I mean Theres a reason why Marvel Studios can make Debuting characters movie like GOTG,Doctor Strange and CM who are LESS KNOWN than Shazam and thier films Have Massive Box office success....and that reason is "21 for 21"....after 21 straight great films, Marvel Studios has build an Audience that Trusts them and carries over to Every MCU film....

You would think after a great Success like Aquaman, DC/WB might have build a little goodwill and Trust but its clear based on Shazam's box office....even after Aquaman Audiences didnt feel connected to the DCEU at all...Literally 70%+ of the audience that saw Aquaman has no interest in Shazam....I guess while Aquaman was a success...It did nothing to repair the DCEU or gets fans and audiences interested in the DCEU again....

PS....

I was speaking of China .....while Shazam isnt doing well in China, anybody read the reports about Endgame shattering all Pre-sale records in China?

Analysts are predicting 75 to 100 M In Presales alone and now A 200 M+ OW in China is guaranteed ...

reply

Shazam is objectively a shit movie, anyone who likes it is an idiot.

reply

I wouldn't say they're an idiot, but you could see from the very first trailer, that it would be cheesy and crappy. I wouldn't waste my money nor bandwidth on this mess.

OUCH!

Gee BillBrown, that was a rather harsh assessment of the current state of Shazam!, WB/DC and the DCEU.

I agree with you on Shazam!'s China performance or lack there of. Marvel as well as Aquaman really set the table for Shazam! to do well. Marvel by default has increased the audience pool for superheroes but it might appear that audience is rather loyal to Marvel only? Aquaman had a huge blitz from Wan, Hamada and Jason Mamoa who is a Pacific islander and is easily consumed by Asian audiences as one of their own. Shazam! should be doing somewhere between $100 and $150 million in the Middle Kingdom and I am not sure how Warner/DC could have stumbled so badly.

I think that WB is committed to a Shazam! sequel with or without Black Adam. The tone of Shazam! wasn't at all as kiddie-friendly as it is marketed which boded well for older audiences but yes, that demo appears NOT to be showing up as of yet. The release in the Marvel window is stealing all of Shazam!'s targeted demographics. Shazam! will make money but it will not be the amounts that a certain poster is woofing about.

My gut feel is that your post is really aimed at one set of eyes who I don't believe will respond and he is loathe to follow up with any valid counters besides his "feels" even if he did. I know Queen requires "Tough Love" in order to learn anything, which he won't, but this is a bit intense for him.

Besides the "21 for 21" streak, Marvel has created a generational loyalty for their brand. Star Wars did the same thing but Marvel is doing this with an intensity and depth that shouldn't be overlooked. For some people Marvel is omni-present in movies with dozens of characters and they have grown up with the MCU. That is the reason Marvel can branch out to bring in more diversity to solidify their presence across the audience marketplace.

Warner/DC can tout Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman and Amanda Waller all they want but Marvel can showcase quite a few supporting female characters and lead characters with and without superpowers. Marvel is and has been in this business for the long haul and appealing to a broader swathe of audiences and consumers is the correct business model.

Can't say that for DC at the moment.

The problem is its a kids movie using source material neither kids and parents are familiar with. I feel like this is a situation where you have to go older as opposed to younger. Shazam is a better movie than Venom but Venom understood the audience better. It moved away from its R rating but it knew that pushing the limits of PG-13 is the way to go.

Its unfortunate too because Zack was fun as a manchild Shazam and Mark made a sinister villain. But the rest of the film was family filler. I guess thats because its cheaper to produce than action.

If they upped the demographic and upped the budget by about $20 million then I honestly think this makes $600 million worldwide.

reply

This movie's made twice its budget already. It'll be fine.

reply

Budget was small for a super hero movie. No big stars.

It'll make money. It's sequel will do better. Good word of mouth.

It's sequel will do better. Good word of mouth.

There is not 1 piece thing about this statement that is true...

Your more than within your to "HOPE A sequel Will do better"

But Nothing about Shazam's performance suggests a sequel Will do better and for some ODD reason, Its clear Shazam seem to NOT Have Good WOM...

I'm sorry but there are some things you cant argue....A Shazam having Good to Great WOM is 1 of them...that Is fact based, You cant just through out "Shazam has Good WOM"....that statement is 100% based on data, and the data unequivocally Points to Shazam having Average WOM .

its worth noting, I too Also was SURE Shazam would have good WOM...I absolutely expected Shazam to Open to a 60 M + OW and Have A Much better 2nd Weekend Hold and The reason why was I thought "Great WOM" would cause it...

But Im completely fact based, and Theres simply no getting around the data...Shazam is literally getting NO REPEAT viewing, Its having complete average holds, and Its Opening weekend received NO BUMP from The Great Reviews, Shazam had been tracking at 47 to 53 Million A MONTH before the Great reviews hit....I was sure with The Reviews Shazam got, It would receive some kind of BUMP in box office and add some new Audience to that tracking and come in higher...But it didnt...It came in exactly where the tracking had BEFORE the reviews hit...theres no getting around that, Great Reviews and the supposed Great WOM...Literally Had ZERO impact on Shazam...

Next I was still thinking maybe we would see the "Great WOM " kick in during the 2nd weekend...but With A 25 M 53% drop, again there just no getting around that data...Shazam had a completely average Hold...NOTHING about that suggests WOM is Great...

Critics clearly loved the film....Theres no denying that...but for whatever reason Audiences just like it or think its decent.

I'm sorry theres just NOTHING true about your statement

Nothing about Shazam's Box office suggests Audiences love it and a sequel will do better....

and Theres truly NOTHING you can point to that suggest WOM is Great.

as I said in my post, Shazam will make a small profit, with a total gross bear 400 Million, that should net WB 50 to 75 Million.

But thats certainly not what WB was hoping for....WB surely now know Shazam with Zack in The Lead is not a draw...

A sequel is possible but it will require the addition of another DC character or A List actor to sell the film....

This is not an exaggeration...Whenever the decision comes to really get serious about Greenlighting a Shazam sequel and getting into The Specifics and details of it...The very first question/statement said by Execs Will be "Ok what can see do to get The Box Office UP for Shazam 2?" It will then be noted Shazam Simply is a draw and They Need a sequel to perform better to justify going forward.

The only possible answer will be to ADD another DC character or A list Star to Shazam 2 for drawing power and so WB feels confident theres a good chance Shazam 2 can perform better than Shazam 1.

Coming back with simply another "Shazam only" sequel is not an option after Shazam has proven not to be a box office draw...WB had everything go Perfect for Shazam...and it still is going to result In very low results...

Its a Unbreakable habit I picked up 6 years When I was making a bunch of Lists of IMDB...

6 years ago I decided I wanted to make Lists of My favorite movies of each year year, I ended up making lists from 1992 until current...

But The Only way I could make these lists were I'd first have to go through and Type out every movie that I liked for that year.

example being...

2012-
The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
The Amazing Spider-Man
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Snow White and The Huntsman

When you list titles of movies, You almost always Capitalize The first latter in each Word..

I listed over 10 Thousand movies probably in the span of 2 weeks making all these lists...

and in doing so, unintentionally created a habit that Is thus far unbreakable....I didnt notice I was Incorrectly capitalizing letters until about 2 weeks after I started.

for a while I would go back and Edit my posts after making them, but to be honest I just got tired of fixed Dozens of incorrectly capitalized letters in posts...

I've accepted the habit now, but I completely understand if it bothers you or anyone else, unfortunately I'm not doing in On Purpose...I truly dont even realize I'm doing it...

Heres my IMDB...you will see literally HUNDREDS of lists....all which have near 100 Movies each listed...If you look at my "favorite Movies" lists from 1992 to current, you'll see they were all made within a short period of time of each other as I said which started the Habit

It still hasn't broken even. Keeping in mind the $100 million budget, and more than another $100 million in promotion, and factoring in what percentage of ticket sales the studio keeps, it needs to hit $360 million, give or take, to break even. It currently stands at $288 million. It will likely eke out enough to hit the break-even, but that's not really the goal, is it?

reply

Think about how dire it is for Dumbo and it's 170 million dollar budget.

About a 540 million breakeven point and it will be lucky to hit 350 million worldwide.

Truly sad.

reply

Its ok Queen. If I was a hardcore DC fan I too would probably be nitpicking at Dumbo to take eyes away from DC. Never mind that Dumbo is just a standalone to get parents to take their kids to theme parks. Or that its just part of a money machine that can't really fail in the long run. And pay no attention to the fact there was never going to be a cinematic Dumboverse resting on its shoulders.

However Batfleck is out before he even got a solo film. And he was the better part of BvS. So the Comedian is the new Batman but will Cavill remain after Flashpoint? Doubtful. And we never got a real MOS2. Who will play Supes after? Nite Owl? Oh wait he's Aquaman's brother. :) Leto Joker out... Phoenix Joker in? But in a different time period? Yikes. Right now WB-DC is the Gadot/Momoa universe.

And how did all of this happen? Justice League. But again if I was in your shoes I'd be complaining about Dumbo too. It helps the pain go away. Doesn't it?

reply

Queen just doesn't get it. Disney are MASSIVE, and Disney wants and needs content for its Disney+ channel.

It simply doesn't matter to Disney whether Dumbo barely breaks even or not, it'll still be popular on name recognition alone on their channel, with the original movie and this remake, it will make money and just continue to be a slow burner.

Shazam was supposed to be a big deal, with 4183 venues, it made $17million this weekend domestically, Captain Marvel with only 2653 venues, made $9.1million and jumped UP two places to number 4 on the chart, in its SEVENTH weekend versus Shazams THIRD.

Diverting attention to Dumbo just seems such a bold move, as we haven't been reminded that Captain Marvel absolutely won't best Wonder Woman domestically.......... why is that I wonder?

reply

lol no whats truly sad is you hilariously accidentally admitted Shazam is going to ONLY make 20 Million or Less PROFIT for WB....

you really need to think before Posting....

Your cutting your own throat....

Of course the right thing to do would simply admit Shazam is a disappointment and Its no where near the box office hit you expected and guaranteed

But you've instead chosen to go down the road of Trying to SPIN drastically Lower Box office results into a GOOD thing....and Lets be Honest, if your going to go down the road of trying to spin Shazam Making 50 Million dollars LESS than you expected on OW, Shazam Making 100 Million dollars Less than you Expected Domestically and Shazam Not even getting within 100 Million of AM1, Let alone AM2, into a positive, Your Road is difficult enough....

But then You Hilariously saying Shazam's Break Even point is 360 Million Pretty Much KILLS All hope of your Impossible task of Spinning Shazam's box office into a Positive...

Shazam is going to top out around 400 Million WW.....

Which means INTO your OWN WORDS Shazam is set to ONLY Make WB less than 20 Million dollars in Profit....theres simply no spinning that....

PS....

think about this, 4 of the 7 DCEU have Netted WB A Combined 105 Million Or LESS In Profit...

WB has Spent Over 1 Billion Dollars Making MOS, BvS, JL and Shazam in Combined Budgets....and Those films combined have Netted WB ONLY 105 Million dollars Or LESS....

I hear you talking about how HOT the state of DC films are right now....man sure doesnt seem to hot to me...

I mean, Wasnt Shazam supposed to be Coming In RED HOT after Aquaman?

lol remember when you claimed JL was going to be RED HOT hot coming off Wonder Woman and claimed it would easily gross 1 Billion?

lol It seems you are either a terrible Judge of the state of DC films "Hottest" or maybe DC films just arent Hot...
