The jokes...

...are they as stupid as they look in the preview? I didn't laugh once. Considering seeing this tonight, but it looks dumb. Is the preview a fair representation of the movie? Is this just DC doing their version of Deadpool? Please let me know, because it is either this or Pet Sematary.

They were quite a few genuine good laughs during the show I when to, it has a really good balance it's serious tone and it's humorous tone....the moments when Billy is trying to figure out how to use his new powers is quite entertaining and I laughed quite a bit. I would certainly recommend this movie if you're looking to have a fun at the movies.

Most of the best jokes/scenes are in the trailers, the movie is surprisingly not anywhere near as funny as I expected it to be.

Its also not in the same league as Deadpool for laughs.

Shazam! is actually more serious than the trailers would suggest, those expecting a laughfest throughout are going to be seriously dissapointed.

reply

Good, I wasn't looking for a Deadpool knock off anyway. I guess you made my decision for me.

reply

dude, its your money, spend it however you like, but don't pretend that my post shoved you in either direction, it suggests a weak will on your part ;)

reply

I came here to see if people would convince me to see it or not. I just wanted some input. If I don't like it, it's not the end of the world, but if I like it then I am glad that I went to see it. There are lots of movies that I didn't care for, but I don't cry about how I wasted my time with it either. A night out is worth the price of admission.

In all honesty, it was simply OK, but the trailers certainly gave the impression it was more kid friendly and going to be funny throughout, but it just missed the mark for me.

The tone set by the trailers is almost night and day.

reply

I actually liked it more than you. I was never bored and it moved along quite nicely. I think the family relationships and the characters made me like it more than most movies of that genre.

I have seen both movies this weekend Pet Cemetery is much better. Shazam is geared more for children and is not the Shazam from the comics the best part of the film are the kid actors. Pet Cemetery is better than the original with a great ending but is a bit slow for the first half.

reply

Oh boy now I have to choose. I might do that Yes and No app. to make a decision.

I also saw both and agree that Pet Semetary is the better film but I also hadn’t seen the original film or read the book so the story was new for me and held my interest from start to finish. It’s a very dark and bleak film that is a deeply unsettling and creepy with strong atmosphere and a few decent jump scares.

Shazam is okay, Levi and Strong are great and there is some fun to be had but none of it really comes together to make a good movie. The third act in particular is very weak as it doesn’t know when to be silly or serious.

reply

Wow, I am surprised that there is some negativity here. I enjoyed Shazam more than most superhero movies. Glad I didn't go by the trailer. Trailers are often not good.

reply

I wish I hadn’t watched the trailers as it ruined most of the funny parts for me and then other times the jokes just fell flat. I don’t know what it is about DC but they just can’t make me laugh like Marvel do. Ant-Man, Spider-Man Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor Ragnarok are all effortlessly more funny than this movie.

Then again those movies didn’t show all their big laughs in the trailers. As I said Levi was great though and carried the movie and it deserves a sequel because of him but I’m surprised this is reviewing as well as it is.

I am particularly hard on super hero movies. This movie made sense to me. It was grounded in family and reality more than a lot of other super hero movies. I guess I can understand all of the difference of opinion though, because I hated the first Avengers movie even though everyone thought it was great. It bored me. Shazam! never bored me. I was very surprised that it was as good as it was, because most DC films have let me down lately.

reply

That’s fair, although I really liked The Avengers, it was interesting to see all of these different characters and personalities clash for the first time.

I wasn’t bored during Shazam until the third act when it just became a Man of Steel final fight. Shazam’s powers just aren’t that different from Superman’s to be visually distinctive, it’s a lot of just flying at each other and punching.

I’d much prefer the movie to have less action at the end and more of the family stuff but somehow people feel cheated if they don’t have an overlong CGI final fight in their superhero movie.
