how else would she have known that he turned around when she was putting on the sweater...

because he felt it with his hands and spoke to her... if she was blind, itd be safe for her to assume he was facing her when feeling her sweater, otherwise he'd have made an idiot out of himself fumbling around behind him for it.

Before he went out there, she was talking to him on the phone, and she looked completely normal, when he went out there, her eyes looked different, vacant, obviously contact lenses, but still one assumes from the original shot of her that she was not supposed to be blind.
However as it says at the end it was based on a true story and no one knows the real truth.
