Your favourite end-of-the-world movie?

I'm glad that the world ended. I couldn't have tolerated another "Cage saves the day" film (or was it Bruce Willis? No, it was definitely Cage. I think.)

Anyway, how do you rate this among the apocalyptic films?

I'm getting to really like Melancholia for its nihilistic themes. The collision scene is just right.

Deep Impact has the best big wave on film. Sure, the world doesn't end, but it's a close thing.

Armageddon has Bruce Willis.

Knowing has Cage. Okay, it also has the equal best train crash scene (equal with Super 8) and possibly the best plane crash and grisly aftermath. And the world ends. NYC really cops it this time, far worse than in any other film.

War of the Worlds (Cruise version) has the best alien invasion. But Cruise saves the day, kind of ("Look at the goddam birds!") and that's just crap. Oh, and the world doesn't end in this one either.

There must be other apocalyptic films that you like.

Alot of crap when it comes to end-of-the-world movies. There is one I remember as being pretty good, Miracle Mile (1988).

When it comes to post apocalyptic movies though, A Boy and His Dog was interesting :)

OP -

War of the Worlds has got that you are there vibe.

2012 is jaw-dropping, on account of the CGI, but not dark enough to be a full-on EOTW film.
Independence Day - likewise.
And it's almost too entertaining.
As soon as you lose that eek factor, an EOTW film morphs into a thrill-ride.

The Road nearly made me crawl up my own a*** with fright.

Armageddon is more adventure than apocalypse.

World War Z has its moments.

I Am Legend - is it just me, or can anyone else detect some hasty editing and please may we have a director's cut, one day?

The original Planet of the Apes.

The original On the Beach.

Knowing is good but not great.

Melancholia has a very interesting end for our planet. The planet gets destroyed the same way it was created billions of years ago.
