So, is this any good?

Any good?

It's not bad. Not great either. Reminded me alot of the 1987 horror flick Night Screams. The story 'teens going to a party in the woods and running into some hillbilly types' has been done before, countless times, but there's this weird trippy feel to it all that I kind of liked.

The final shot of the film (along with the melancholy music playing in the background) was both unsettling and strangely beautiful. Zima, as usual, delivers, and Carteris looks great considering all that she's gone through the past few years.

i'm gonna try to summarize my opinions with only one word about this movie to you.

"retarded".

I just finished watching it and I was highly disappointed. It was filled with too much screaming and cheese. The only positive thing about it was the "twist" the story took in the last five minutes. I wouldn't waste the time on it.

reply

I agree. Not a horrible movie but not great at all. Didnt really even make sense until the lil "twist" came in. Zima was the best part of the whole thing.

It had its faults, but I thought the acting was on point from not just Zima, but the Spelling kid and Ashley Pedlon wasn't bad either. (she also looks good in a nighty I might ad)
I agree that the final shot was unsettling and lead me to believe that there was a connection between the two characters (literal or figurative in the story) I liked the way this film unfolded, it was not typical and I appreciate it when a genre film goes against the grain a bit...hopefully it was intended, but I felt it was in this case. I got the twist earlier. There is a few parts before where characters casually say things that went unnoticed by my girlfriend. It was very subtle. When we replayed it, she knew I was right. You have to listen carefully The final five/ten minutes of film is explanation why. Anyways...getting wordy but just thought i would throw that out there.
As far as the horror, some very scary parts, yes a lot of screaming, but I felt it was realistic for what was happenind. There is an overall sense of creepy dread maintained and a few parts that really made me jump. A decent effort...i felt.

I got the twist pretty early too, but that's just habit. I think they were sufficiently subtle with the twist that it could be enjoyable by a wider audience.

What bothered me most about this film was the characters themselves. Part of enjoying a good film is being able to identify, and at least to some degree, care about the characters. Perhaps I should say 'victims' as this is a horror flick. How this crop ever managed to stay together as "friends" is beyond me. There is so much spiteful hatred between some of the characters that I just couldn't bring myself to care about their fate.

I am curious as to which "final shot" you believe shows a "connection"...
Is it the shot of the detective and the neighbor girl, indicating a connection between Frances and her? Or between Frances and Adam?

On the whole, the movie itself was decent for what it was. Not entirely original, but very few things are these days. I can't say much more without nitpicking and spoiling, but I don't think it's a waste to check out!

-BIG-BIG SPOILERS BELOW-

The final shot between Frances and Adam. The little girl I took as just a symbol and also the detective thinking about Frances as a little girl and her past, since there is no records. The detective contemplating where she might have come from when he sees this little girl across the street.

The Frances and Adam shot...I dont know, he is definitey attracted to her and there was a feeling I got that she was attracted to him at the station. I know she felt sorry for him. She was willing to come out of her shell and stick up for him when he was being beat up by Billy (who definitely knew this freaky dude was attracted to his Frances) but anyway...a thought that crossed my mind was that he felt she killed all of them for him. He is reading the internet news about the murders and smiles, then they cut to that shot. Then another thought crossed my mind that maybe that is one part of why she did commmit these murders. She did kiss the boy before she was reminded of what has happened by noticing her sketched eyes on his wall. It just seemed like, for lack of a better description, "he was her type of crowd" and this group treating this boy like crap, played a part in her flipping her lid. Anyway, i may be reading real deep, but just some thoughts I had.

I liked it, but i can see how it might be a film some people dont like. Madeline Zima and i thought Ashley Peldon were good in it.
