What is your opinion of the movie? I'm just curios because every (almost) sucks badly and I'm surprised that it's getting good reviews.

reply

Its a great movie, I have to admitt I had my doubts, however this film will make you remember the original bambi in many ways, this is one sequel I have to say from my point of view is better than its original. However I liked the music and animation better, bambi 1 still has its special place in my heart.

I was also stunned that they used alot of Walts idea's that he wanted to put into Bambi, however as Walt said, he wouldn't have minded doing a motion picture to show what happens in the time that Bambi's mother dies and when the Great Prince steps in.

Also just to mention, the Great Prince was not snobby, just trying to be regal and show his son how to be proper and strong, however Bambi shows his dad that being tuff is not the most important thing and its ok to Wooo Whoo, the ending had me in tears, just a quick tip remember Bambi does grow up.

The only disappointment I found in this whole Bambi II ordeal is they did not release any lithographs. The animation is so great it needed it.

However I really wish Disney would have given this a theatrical release, if you have seen this movie can you tell me if you agree of disagree.

Also the only thing I found wrong with Bambi is when he asked his father
What are you doing?

In Bambi 1, he asked Thumper whatcha doin

Only thing I think they could have corrected
is that.

tell me what you guys think

Hmm, If you say It’s good, then I’ll have a peek on this. I had my doubts over the Disney sequels that they will suck (except The Rescuers, The Lion King 2, Lady and The Tramp 2 ,Fantasia 2000), and I thought that this will suck especially bad. But if you say it that It’s good, then I’ll give it a chance.

Anyone else? Just fill the boards with your comments...

reply

I didnt think the "What are you doing" part was bothersome. I mean, you'd usually say "Whatcha doin?" if you were being playful. He asked "What are you doing?" the way he did because he was nervous and did not want to sound to childish.

reply

Unique gap b/n the 2(60 years)You could say it's a modern day original & a period sequel.lol. Not that it would matter in a story w/ pristine characters who haven't changed since midevil or even prehistoric times, but I believe the hunting style used on deer(dogs) was probably legal in the early 1940's

There's only 1 Yogi Bear. Thet tried a 2nd time, & they made a Booboo!

reply

I loved the first one and was bummed to hear about a second one. Still I bought the second one and I'm in love all again. They tried to stay with the same rules Disney set. I have seen this movie three times and I'm going to watch it again! I love this movie and its not one of those dumn squels! Plus none of the animals burst into song singing about this and that. The groundhog don't count!

I give this movie a 2 thumbs up!

reply

If I had four hand I would give it four thumbs up. Patrick Stewart did a GREAT job as the father he was PEFECT for that part. I love how Bambi learns how to be a prince and tries to get his father to lighten up. The ending left me in a tear or more. It was great I loved it and now I know who that mean buck was in the first one Ronno stupid mean buck I'm glad Bambi beat him in the first one. He deserved it after what he did in the second movie!

Yes, I just watched the film last night -- and believe me, after Disney's recent sequels, I was doing so with no small trepidation! -- but I think that any who share in these worries before seeing the film can rest assured: somehow, they managed to create a delightful sequel (or maybe it's more of an "inbetweenequal"), with an extravagent mix of humor and drama true to the spirit of the first.

I guess they finally noticed the recurring pitfalls in their other sequels: making the humor too sarcastic and over-the-top when compared with the subtlety of the classics, and altering the disposition of the characters to suit; featuring an often bland and somewhat lossely-knit storyline; and, most notably, overwhelming audiences with a disturbingly modern soundtrack.

But this sequel brilliantly avoids all of these: the humor is abundant, but more reminiscent of the classic Disney style than of a Steven Spielburg or Matt Groenig innovation; the characters are virtually identical to their past representations (and the somewhat obscure personality of the Great Prince is ingeniously given substance by Patrick Stewart); the storyline is on-focus and engaging; and the music, even when not identical to that of the first movie, is perfectly in line with the emotiuon of the film.

(By the way, a lot of people are complaining about the part where Flower, er, "emits"; YOU try being a pre-pubescent skunk demonstrating your anger skills for the first time, and see if YOU don't make a stink -- it's not the same as flatulence, you know! The flowers wilting was unrealistic, sure, but not over-the-top for an animated feature and still funny. Plus, it fits Flower's shy 'did-I-really-do-that' disposition perfectly!)

You know the deer calls, that hunter uses to make deer think there are other deer around. Thanks all you here. Is a faint voice of "I'm Here" I suppose
thats what they are talking about.

Remembering me to the one scene in Saltens book, when Bambi tries to follow the call from Faline and was stopped by the Great Prince, because it was a deer call from the hunter, pretending he is a doe.
Did they really add a similar scene in "Bambi II"? Cool! As everyone know, i still have my doubts with this sequel, but slowly and surely my hope that it turned out as a good movie getting stronger... :-)

My opinion is IT WAS ALSOME. i loved it it was buetful it had me in tears at the end. my favorite part was when his stomach was growling and his dad says " What was that" and when the Great Prince says " I prince does not say Whoo hoo."

reply

I agree that those were great parts, however I liked the more dramatic and tear-jerker scenes, like when Meena does a total Bambi's mom, and say run Bambi, run go now, don't look back run Bambi.

The hair on my neck stood up str8. Also the part when he is talking about his mom and the Great Prince tells him a Prince never lives in the past, or something along that nature.

Also I loved the ending when the ground caved in and Bambi fell and everyone thought he had died. And the Great Price was like Bambi, get up, get up a prince does not.... and than he just knelt down beside him and, oh snap it was so hard not to cry, however I did find myself thinking I hope doesn't die. Than I remembered he grew up in the first one.

However my favorite non drama scenes were the opening song, There is Life. One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

Also I forget the spring song, however it is where they show the bucks dashing, and Bambi ask his father when will he be ready, and his father than spends the day with his son, as the song ends they are back at the boro or den? And Bambi is so wired, and doesn't want to sleep.

So sleep at nite, some durring the day, and some none at all...
Remind me never to give you blossoms before bedtime.

Well those are my favorite scenes. I hope you guys and gals can add your favorite scenes and stuff in. It would be so great to hear oppinions of others on what your favorite scene is.

Well g2g

I liked the dream sequence where Bambi is visited by his mother -- depressing, but beautiful. I also loved him getting the butterfly caught in his mouth -- nice little touch adding to the original theme of the butterfly landing on his nose!

It isn't fair the UK doesn't get it until April.

reply

Well you always have the option of buying a multi-region player and than getting it from the USA
Thats what I did for alot of the UK movies. I mean you guys have movies that are loaded and besides you all have Nanny McPhee already. Which I just purchased. I must say multi-region players have this nice little nack for letting you explore other dvd's and seeing just what your missing from your home country.
Hope that helps

The opening sequence of the movie reminded me of Little Foot. When Bambi was calling out "Mother! Mother!" It's just a small section but I was instantly thinking LBT. But was that not in the first movie as well?

reply

1. When Ronno is trying to impress Faline by telling her of his run-in with Man
Hmmm, this scene is according to Felix Salten's Book "Bambi", first published in 1923...
It was not used in the original movie from 1942, but in the book Ronno had an old wound from a shot on one of his legs and limp a little. He told the story of his encounter wit Man in the book to other animals too.

O am i the only one who wishes Gobo was included in the movies. I mean it would have made the original even more dramatic and sad, but still i always liked delicate Gobo

Hmmm, yes, i tought the same, when i read the book for the first time, but later i think about it, and Gobo's story would distract the audience from the main story about Bambi.
I think, the problem for all moviemakers is, that a book works with a different technique than a movie. There are different like a symphony and a painting (but both can evoke the same feelings). What works fine in a book, will be boring or distracting in a movie and vice versa, i.e. The book has no climax, no final adventure to proof Bambi as a hero. The book works quite good without it, but a movie will surely not... so Disney add the forest fire.
"Him" was shown in the book, and the animals have long discussions about "Him", his power, goals etc, "Him" was often shown in every detail. This work very well in a book, but in a movie this will "Him" turning into as a predictable, simple, common movie-villain, so Disney changed "Man" to an unseen force, a dark menace. The far better solution for a film.
The same with the long dialogue of the two leaves in winter. In the book it is one of the most moving chapters, but in a movie such a dialogue will be awkward. So Disney changed this scene: No words, only impressive pictures and music.
It's the same with a lot of other things, that distinguish the book and the movie.

I love both equal, the book and the movie, and both evoke the same feelings for me.

It was great but i expected it to be longer, it was only an hour and 4 minutes long, I was expecting Bambi to be grown up at the end fighting Ronno. :/

reply

I was disappointed. I made sure to watch the first one and then immediately this to get the comparison down. What I found was that Bambi was a film that barely needed dialogue. In Bambi II, so much of the character interaction was dialogue depedent, a lot of the themes were laid on really thick, and the conversations dwelled on repetition and overstatement. Granted, this film was more subtle than other awful disney sequels, but there's a whole new approach to the narrative that just doesn't agree with the original. The whole "running joke" of the *grrrr* was pointless and irritating. The frogs getting in on the joke later and *grr*ing to each other really illustrated the modern style humor used throughout the movie that just didn't fit. Bambi's line about a young fawns development or whatever was totally out of place. IT's these little things that disrupt the tone of the movie and really bog it down in comparison to the first Bambi.

Not to say it was completely awful. The backgrounds were fantastic and a testament to the artistry of the original. Using things from the book that weren't in the original was a great idea. The animation was fluid and well done. The music had its moments. The re-use of the dramatic lighting from the rutting battle of the first one was a great touch. You could tell that the artists were really trying and had a genuine respect for the source material, rather than trying to squeeze some extra dollars out of the property. However, I got the feeling that Bambi II is much like Bambi's imitating little brother going "Hey! Hey! I can do that too! Watch me!" when you know that there's really nothing it can do to be as important or impressive as the first performance.

reply

I agree about the dialogue, and I also found that some of the original character molds were broken (for example, why didn't Thumper thump more than once the entire movie?). I also would have to say that the graphic landscapes were beautiful and impressive for a straight to dvd sequel. It's obvious that they didn't just throw everything together for a few extra bucks, the animators cared enough to take the time and create details.

Overall I enjoyed this movie, but I haven't seen the original for over a decade. I remember not enjoying Bambi as a child because it was depressing to me...I'll have to watch it again but from the memories I'd actually venture to guess that I like the sequel better, except the weaker character development.

reply

I loved this movie probaly the best DTV movie I have ever seen in my life period. If they made all the DTV'S as well as they did with Bambi 2 I believe people wouldn't dislike DTV'S so much. Everyone played their role perfectly. I have 2 problems with the movie and that's it.

1. The Music

2. IMO I believed it could have been a little longer then it was.

Other then those 2 problems everything about the movie was great.

I also really liked that "There is Life" songpiece. Very melodic and naturalistic, especially the critters that feature in the piece. Nice lyrics, too ("The colder the winter, the warmer the spring / and the greater the sadness, the more our hearts sing" -- or something like that!)

reply

(for example, why didn't Thumper thump more than once the entire movie?).

In the 1942 original, Thumper thumps only twice: The first time before the hollow log: "I'm thumpin', thats why they call me Thumper!" and later near the end (together with his kids), when he wakes up friend Owl to visit Faline and her fawns.
When i saw the film after more than 30 years for the second time again, i was very surprised too. In my memory i clearly recall that Thumper do far more thumping in the movie... but it was only imagination of me.

he also thumped when he was twitterpated :D

reply

Yes, you arew right! Wrong memory again! I really forget this!
(A clear sign for me to see the film again to brush up my mamory... for the 40th or 50th again? I did not count it anymore ;-)

"What happened mother? Why did we all run?"

reply

And he thumped to wake up Flower during their first winter (as he did in the sequel)!

(Skunks don't really hibernate, though; they just become less active in winter, sort of like raccoons.)

reply

The only reason i kind of watched it was for the animation. Gave it really good justice, and it's the perfect movie if you want to learn how to draw deer. the movie itself...aww...it's okay. Ronno's the one that saved it. I really wished he got more scenes he was so cool.

I have seen it, and, let me just say, that this isn't something I really would consider as "better" than the original, though there are several positive aspects that I have noticed: it captures the spirit of the original film, such as the beautiful and lush animation; it fills up the plot hole between when Bambi's mother died and when Bambi has grown up and learns about being "twitterpated"; and Patrick Stewart. I don't think anyone would do any better than he did, expressing dignity and rigor in his vocal portrayal.

"What happened, Mother? Why did we all run?"

reply

The bit that really got me near to tears was when it shows Bambi and his father's relationship growing with the song in the background. I forgot the song name but it really is a beautiful moment :D

reply

Unlike many sequels especialy by Disney, this one quite amaized me.

Very good story, no hero things, nice animation yet very good preservation with the first one (was amaized how good the owl was looking when I compared with the original). Even the voices were good.

A little bit out of place maybe when it comes to the character of the Great Prince, but it's all right.

So I did liked it, and I am defenetely not sorry I did watched it.

I have to say.... I LOVE THIS MOVIE.. it was great.. it even made my husband cry..

I love the part when Thumper is trying to help Bambi jump, and he says " You are ascared, you can not do it... nah nah nah nah nah.. nah nah nah nah nah.." I thought that it was funny if you listen to the melody you can hear that they might have gotten that from Miss Congeniality. " You think I'm sexy, you want to marry me."

This movie in a whole.. OMGosh.. I think that me and my daughter have watched it ove 20 times.. She loves it to

Oh dear god! I hate fart jokes in movies. It's bad enough that the jokes come up in real life. IT'S A NORMAL BODY FUNCTION WHY IS IT SO FUNNY?! Is breathing funny or blinking? A fart joke in a cartoon is just a plee for laughs. As it is in Digital Animation.
