Watch *MIRAGE OF BLAZE* series and OVA on American TV!

If you want to watch Mirage of Blaze but don't have money to spend on all the DVDs, you can watch it on Encore Wam (http://www.encoretv.com/appmanager/seg/e?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=encore_wam). It's channel 200-something for me, but I think it depends on where you live.

Anyway, the series just finished for the first time and the OVA is being shown until tomorrow. I watched part 2 of the OVA today, even though I own all the DVDs, just because I wanted to see what it was like. It's really cool because there are no commercial breaks, and it doesn't seem to be censored at all (anyone else who's seen part 2 of the OVA knows it can't get much worse than that, so if they left that scene alone then what else would they mess with?).

Unfortunately, as expected, it's the dubbed version that's being aired. I'm not one of those so-called "purists" who automatically hates any English dub they hear, and I actually think the Mirage of Blaze dub is decent, but I'd still much prefer to watch anime characters speaking with their "natural" Japanese voices. Still, I'm just happy that Mirage of Blaze is even being shown at all, and uncensored, too!

If you missed it the first time around, the series will start again on June 16th @ 4:30 PM where I live, but I'd reccomend checking your local TV guide. It will then repeat each episode twice in the late night/early morning hours before showing the next episode @ 4:30 PM (or whenever it was the previous day where you live) the very next day. After all 13 series episodes are aired, the OVA will presumably be shown again, split into three half-hour parts. Enjoy!

I just ran across this show by accident! I am a little lost right now but I am going to stick with it. It's got an interesting premise. I am suprised however to find "yaoi" on WAM. I don't think adults are missing this.

I was surprised, too.

Unfortunately, I missed a couple of episodes, so thank goodness for repeats. Plus I read some summaries on another message board, so I was able to catch up. Still I prefer seeing the episodes.

There is one scene in the OAV that totally shocked me.

Yeah, definitely stick with it, TSearcy! It's well worth it! And if you have any specific questions we can always try to help you out.

I was more surprised to find MOB on TV because of it's relative unpopularity (um...just look at this message board!) than because of it's homosexual themes, since there's nothing very explicit. I was, however, extremely shocked and happy to learn that they are also showing the OVA. As BookLover already kind of pointed out, there's one scene that takes the relationship between Naoe and Kagetora/Takaya waaaaay farther than anything in the original anime series. It's my absolute favorite scene in either the series or the OVA because all the tension that's been building up between the two men for over 13 episodes finally comes to a head as Naoe reaches his breaking point and drags Takaya/Kagetora down with him. It's so intense! Even though I own the series and OVA, I still watched that part on WAM just to make sure it wasn't censored at all (don't worry, it isn't).

You have described that perfectly, Cassandra666!

When I started watch MoB, I had read that it was classified as yaoi. Watching the first few episodes, I couldn't really see it; unlike Gravitation and Descendants of Darkness. With those two, I had no doubt what was going on there! But then I realized it was very subtle and, as you said, tension filled. Plus, I would have seen it sooner, if I hadn't missed a couple of episodes!

Speaking of missing eps, It's over. They've started over from the beginning. I was really looking foward to a new ep everyday however the downside is that I burned right thru the series in only 2 weeks. Aww

TSearcy,

I'm sure they will be showing it, again. I've checked WAM's schedule for August and they are going to Samurai Deeper Kyo for awhile, but I'm sure MOB will return to their line up eventually.

Goodness, look how many times they showed Vandread!!

reply

Speaking of Vandread you should see Eiken on Encore Action. My Gawd! It makes Vandread look like it belongs on ABC Family!

I did see Eiken and my EYES still have not recovered, yet! I was totally grossed out by this anime, TSearcy!

I laughed just once, when the guy lost his wig.

At least I have one more anime to add to my "seen" list, but it will not be added to my "watch again" list!

I'd never heard of Eiken, but I just looked it up on Google and, um...yeah, I think I can see what you guys are talking about. Probably not one I will be watching. *crosses arms over B-cups and slinks away into a corner* LOL!

I watched a taped showing today. They actor playing Kagetora was very handsome and the costumes were nice and it was cool to get background information about the conflict in narrative. It aint shogun but it's geat as a Saturday Afternoon Movie. Some people might get turned off by the subtitles but if you really love Anime and Asian Cinema well, it goes with the territory.

Hey, Tsearcy, thanks for the review. I'm looking forward in seeing it!

Speaking of Asian films, I was never too interested in seeing them until I saw House of Flying Daggers. What a visually stunning movie. I dedicate Sunday afternoons to anime and movies. Showtime shows quite a bit of Asian movies; unfortunately, they show the same ones over and over, again.

Do you have any favorite Asian films?

I've included links to clips on Youtube or when they're not available I've listed the IMDB link.

You may also want to tape Samurai Saturdays on IFC however they show a lot of Kirasawa black and white stuff. Spike also shows Kung fu on Saturdays at 2pm.

BTW-I cried in the theatre on HOFD during the scene when they are in the field and she's picking wildflowers. It was just so beautiful.

I don't have Showtime. Damn! I'm jealous! But I'm glad you liked Heaven and Earth. Do you think it's worth renting sometime?

My favorite Asian movie is Battle Royale, which is an extremely depressing movie about kids who need to kill each other to survive. It takes a really in-depth look into the darkest recesses of human nature. That's what makes it even more painful to watch, because you know how realistic it is on an emotional level. It is actually one of my favorite movies from ANY country.

My brother's friend owns Ichi the Killer, and I've planned on borrowing it from him for some time now. It sounds very disturbing, but it takes so much to freak me out that I immediately have a lot of respect for any movie that can.

Also, another of my friends owns Oldboy, which I've heard is really good. And I love movies that make me think, so maybe I should ask him to let me borrow it.

Audition is on my Netflix list, and so is Gohatto (Taboo). Have you ever seen Gohatto? It's about homosexuality among the ancient samurai. It sounds really interesting, but I can't really recommend it because I haven't seen it yet.

TSearcy and Cassandra666,

Thank you for the suggestions. I have started a "must see" list.

Unfortunately, I don't have IFC and I'm really bummed out, too. They are showing Samurai 7 and it looks great. Oh, well, maybe I'll rent it....

I should be seeing Heaven and Earth in a couple of days!

Unfortunately, I don't live near a MovieStop (the first time I've heard of them! lol). I will keep my eyes open, though. Maybe I'll check eBay!

Well, I saw H and H yesterday (I actually left work early so I wouldn't get caught in traffic!)

It wasn't too bad. I loved the costumes. There were a couple of things I found interesting, though...

- how the narrator pronounced Kagetora. At first, I didn't understand what he was saying, then it clicked! It certainly was pronounced differently in the anime.

- I was hoping that Noae (sp) had a bigger part. I think he had only one line! Kagetora did give him some orders and he responded.

- the costumes were quite colorful. The orange ones were quite vibrant (certainly something you couldn't miss on a battlefield!)

- it was sad he Kagetora killed Usami

- it was also sad when Kagetora found out that Nami died

Last but not least...

You're right, the guy who played Kagetora was very good looking! I thought he looked really good in on scene. It was when he had "run away" and some of his troops caught up with and presuaded him to return and fight. He had a scruffy beard. I found that scene interesting too, because his enemy was inches from him and didn't even know it!

" …, you morally bankrupt Colonel with a God complex." Edward Elric

reply

I don't live near a MovieStop either. Damn!

That movie sounds really interesting. From what I've read, the costumes are about as historically accurate as if the actors had just worn jeans and t-shirts (yep, that's close to how one critic worded it). But at least they were nice to look at, as is Kagetora, apparently.

Booklover, I love how you phrased that: "Kagetora did give him some orders and he responded." That's our Naoe! ^__^ Even if he only had one line, that's still really exciting! Of course, I wouldn't see the movie just for that one scene, but it sounds like the rest of it was good, too.

OOOHHHH, that sounds really good (I had to look it up, first, though!) I have to leave for work around 5, so I may not see the entire movie... unless I leave late!!

If I don't catch it then, I'll watch it on Sunday morning at 3:45 a.m.

If you guys haven't seen "Kunoichi:Lady Ninja" you will love it. It's campy in a good way. They use sex to gain power, cooky effects etc. It's like it was snatched right out of a Manga. It comes on Thursday 10/5/06 at 12:40am.
