Oh, was this awfull.

I'm not picky with movies, oh I've seen so much crap I could watch anything. Maybe that was the reason I watched this one to the end. Im big fan of RPG games too, but this movie, its a disgrace to any self-respecting RPGer there is. The security-camera footage of a game-play would make it feel more realistic than this movie does. The lines, the cuts, the audio, everything is wrong. In some scenes you can see that it was filmed in some photo when !!!!!(spoilers ahead)!!!!!people running around does not disturb people sitting near computers. I mean would you continue your work if you got ninjas around you? oh and the jokes about pirates, that's the worst one yet in movies!!!!!(spoilers end)!!!!! At least first one felt like a documentary, now it looks like someones home video experiment. You can find better movies at youtube. Top line: Don't waste your time and money on this one, its as bad as it comes.

If you didn't laugh yourself silly throughout this movie you are not a gamer. Playing Final Fantasy does not make you one.

reply

Well,I'm not a gamer and I loved this movie. I didn't have a clue what the pirates and ninja's were about until the "everything is better with pirates" comment.
I saw the first movie kind of by accident and thought it was really funny, so when I heard there's a second one out there I couldn't wait to see it.

So becasue i have a taste in movies i can not be a gamer?
And just for the fact: I never played final fantasy.

"If you have a gun, you don't need to work out"

reply

Yeah, I agree with you. The CGI was awful and the actors were second rate...

Oh man gives us a break. This is a fan movie, what did you expect? The writing was brilliant, but there were bound to be some limitation on the FX

reply

Totally. This isnt a big budget movie. They only got so much to play with and I think theyve done very well.

reply

This movie has a bard being killed by an undead turkey. It's *beep* awesome (and I'm not an RPGer... actually I mostly play FPS games)

reply

Yeah Im a long time FPS player, with a little mmorpg now and then. Still think it reflected gamer type people very well despite being about d&d. Felt very Kevin Smith or Joss Wheadon

reply

Have to agree this movie is really bad....how the heck did it get a rating of 7.6!

Is this thread a joke? People not being disturbed by pirates running by them? that's your complaint?

Kevin and Joanne were playing a board game and that scene was merely a representation of what was happening in the board game. Did that point slip by you?

If you didn't get that part, did you miss the central conceit of the movie? RPGers playing their characters and then acting out what their characters are doing? Just curious.

That whole pirate scene was shot in the Wizards of the Coast offices. Not "in a photo"

Oy.

reply

The scenes with pirates and ninajs was five minutes of fluff made for ONE joke. It was silly filler where the movie's staff knew a couple people who has martial arts skills, and also had some pirate costumes laying about. The whole scene was contrived and unfunny.

In a 'good' film, nothing is unnecssary or wasted. This one scene, as well as many others, did nothing to add to the story...they were just filling time.

reply

May i answer question to a question: Is this movie a joke? if so, its not funny. Thats one of MANY bad scenes in this movie, i jut gave an example. They played the board game, so it should be filmed to actually acknowledge people that they were doing so before the game ended. People playing out their rpg characters would do better than your actors did, and would make better special effects even with as primitive programs as windows movie maker, so that isn't really and excuse for having created a bad movie. its a good concept, but performed extremely poorly.
Ok, you shot the scene in Wizards of the Coast office, but it ended up looking to be shot in a photo, bad editing/filming/script or what is the reason?

I have a feeling that you're way off on this.

reply

"They played the board game, so it should be filmed to actually acknowledge people that they were doing so before the game ended."

So they should have told the punchline BEFORE the joke?

I hate how people expect the effects to be straight out of the "Transformers" movie these days...

Seriously; this movie was AMAZINGLY well written, the jokes were delivered perfectly, and it didn't try to get too serious. They knew it'd be low budget, so they counted on the script and the heart of the movie to pull it through. And I think it did. I gave it a 10/10. F'ing LOVED it.

Seriously, the male & female Luster "tagging out" didn't clue you in that they were even making fun of THEMSELVES as well? Movies like this are what keep young & unproven film-makers inspired and trying to make something of themselves. I envy them for how well they pulled this off, especially the promotional stuff with Wizards of the Coast.

... says the person who isn't a gamer...

Actually, most self-respecting gamers will back this film up without a thought otherwise.

And as Lodge said in the film. Everything's better with pirates.

reply

I use to play D&D, and hell, even at age 39 with a wife and two kids I play Magic on Friday nights. Still, I know a good movie from an ok movie from a bad movie. This POS was worse than bad.

reply

You really need to open your eyes. I am gamer enough to understand where this movie tried to go, but it did not finnish its ride. Any self-respecting gamer would hide this movie from their friends, not back it up, as this was a garbage of the kind.

------------------------------------------
I have a feeling that you're way off on this.

reply

dude if you really dont like it that much go and make a better movie, i'm actually being serious here... it seems like you really think you know how to do the movie better and how things should have been in it, so go and get the same budget they had and make your own.

reply

I actually wrote couple scripts already, though being better than yours they never made it there. Hail LKS. With the movie making situation i have in my country there is no way to even consider making ANYTHING with budget like yours. Im not going to migrate just to prove something to you.

reply

You don't need a multi-million dollar budget. Hell, "Blair Witch Project" was done for the price of a new high-end car (about $60,000 USD) and they made MILLIONS.

And just because you live somewhere other than the US doesn't mean you can't make a movie with a low-budget. Where do you think they go to shoot a lot of movies these days?...OTHER COUNTRIES. Its cheaper, you get better locations, and its just as good, if not better.

If your scripts are so good, then just fly out here and pitch your scripts; you don't need to "migrate" (I think you mean "emigrate" by the way). Just make some appointments and pitch your scripts.

Seriously, think before you hit the "post" button.

well excuse me for not making another *beep* movie there already are too many because i got 300 euros budget, alright? give me 60 000 USD and ill make better one than you have, else, stop talking about things you clearly have no clue about. ever tried filming in Lithuania? right, so why am i even discussing this? why should i "prove" you anything anyway.

After getting called out: "well excuse me for not making another *beep* movie there already are too many...why should i "prove" you anything anyway."

I love how all the great movie scripts he's got in the works are just all of a sudden no good since there are "too many" movies already.

Oh, and you don't have to "prove" anything to any of us, because you have already proved that you're full of crap anyway. Like I said before, think before you post. Or just go away. Actually, yes; just go away.

reply

Hey! Don't diss all us Europeans =(

Me and my friend loved this movie and we are both from an non-English speaking European country; she's the hard-core gamer of the two of us, although I have done a bit of D&D occasionally. Not to mention we both play Final Fantasy now and then so there's that theory out the window =P

So it's low budget. They did great with the little they had and even if the pirates and ninjas felt a bit as if they'd been shoehorned in there I still loved them. It's true - everything IS better with pirates =D

Someone else already mentioned Monthy Python so I won't.

When you think of all the films out there with awesome budgets that suck donkey butt - Star Wars 1 & 2 (couldn't even watch 3 *shudder*) come to mind - these guys did an absolutely awesome job.

In fact, I'm gonna go watch it right now! =D

reply

So did you ever make your better movie?

As well called by joel_connelly and seems the only reason you came here to *beep* on this one, because as a long time gamer from years back, and along with every other gamer who I have shown this too, I absolutely LOVED it, and they like me laughed my ass off and watched it over and over again.

reply

So did you ever make your better movie?

Oh, you didn't see him on "The Writers' Room"? He was on that episode with James Cameron and George Lucas...the bathroom door opens in the background and you can see Strazdamonas cleaning the toilets. Unfortunately they fired him shortly afterwards for stealing; they found him completely full of s***.

The first Gamers looked like it was filmed completely on someone's camcorder, but it's Dorkness Rising that you think "looks like someone's home video experiment"?

I liked it. I was able to look past the low budget, and was able to laugh because as a long time gamer I can relate with many of those situations.

Jayne: Don't know these folks. Don't much care to.
Mal: They're whores.
Jayne: I'm in!

reply

I'm not a gamer any longer (and never played D&D), but I can relate to everything in the film. Yes, the acting was second rate, the FX was very cheap and the combat scenes very, very amateurish, but that didn't matter. This was a satire, but a satire that did not was respectful to the subject, and by that, made great humour out of it.

<i>people running around does not disturb people sitting near computers. I mean would you continue your work if you got ninjas around you?</i>

Yes. I used to work at a large game company, and I had to contend with ninjas, pirates, lightsaber fights, and full-on large-scale Nerf warfare on a regular basis. You either learn very quickly to ignore them and to accept that you might be collateral damage, you develop shielding for your cubicle, or you go armed as well.

This movie was an in-joke for other gamers.Yes, it's bad, with the same good-natured humor of telling a bad joke or making puns. Just like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was not a learned treatise on the culture of medieval Europe, this wasn't a close examination of role-playing games and their player base. Not liking it because you didn't think it was funny makes sense. Not liking it because it lacked realism is a bit peculiar...
