Why did she leave?

I can think of many reasons.. I just wanna hear other opinions... why did she leave at the end? We can clearly see that she feels the same way for him as he does for her so... why?

reply

You're right. There are so many different reasonsThe one which most vividly shone through was that she didn't really believe in that "relationship". From the very start she ridiculed it, laughed at his efforts and ministrations (I kind of felt bad for the guy, if he keeps falling for that kind of girls.. ). Though I did sense her warming up a bit near the end. Whether leaving was the right thing to do .. I don't think so. She just gave up, not willing to make an effort.
I really hated her in the end.
For she ruined the happily ever after illusion.

I feel like she almost liked being alone and unhappy. Like if she wasn't miserable she wouldn't be herself. I really didn't like her in the end either. But then again.. it lasted less than a day, right? How can you blame her for ending a relationship that never even happened.

Alexis said she knew he wasn't the one. That's what she said, but I really don't think that's what she wants. Like qt said, it's almost like she wants to be miserable. If she couldn't see herself with Manny for the rest of a life that would be fun, loving, and pure bliss, then I think she will have the same problem Manny has. Where Manny lost a love that he will never get back, and never let go at the same time.

I guarantee anybody that walks in on you watching that movie will think you're a complete idiot, because of the big smile you will have on. Fun movie.

He wasn't her type. She's doomed, he's doomed, we're all doomed.

What a great film. Everyone should study this. High school student, indy filmmaker, Stephen Speilberg. This is how its done.

Haven't you ever really liked someone but known deep down that it just isn't meant to be? I think thats how she felt. It's not that she was happy about leaving him or didn't love him or enjoy the time she spent with him; but she just knew that it had to end.

reply

But there's absolutely no reason that it "had" to end except that she decided so... I don't think she could have established by that point that it wasn't "meant to be" - it may be something she told herself to justify leaving but I think she just as well could have stayed with him.

A different take from me:

She was from Toronto and was only visiting Quebec for the day.

Even though she was, I gather, a freelance photojournalist, she had other commitments in Toronto and simply couldn't leave them behind and he had a teaching job in Quebec.

As he said at one point "long distance relationships don't work."
