other post punk documentries?

does anyone know if there are any documentries on post punk or the indie scene?
ie bands like joy division, the smiths, jesus and mary chain, husker du, gang of four?

ive watched 24 hour party people but I was after something more archive footage even though that movie is awesome

btw is "here are the young men"-the joy division video release from 1983 I think, ever going to come on DVD!!!

Yeah, it sucks that practically he entire 80 punk scene was ignored. I know, I know, there are going to be a ton of people who prolaim that there wasn't any 80s punk and that aside from the ramones all punk died around 1981. Whatever. Saying crap like "Bad Religion isn't punk" is laughable. I don't care if you're a Bad Religion fan or not. What I'm getting at is that an entire segment of punk music is so often overlooked that it's depressing. The mention of Our Band Could Be Your Life is a good step in the right direction.

I yhaven't seen this movie.. im just trying to find ANY good movies about punk music in general.. dont really care if they cover the 70's, 80's, 90's whatever....
i'm gonna hafta agree entirely with whoever said that this movie ends with sum 41 and bands like that???
plz.. sum 41 aren't punk.. they're as punk as good charlotte.. meaning they're the boy bands of punk rock.. the muppets of rebellion lol.
i mean there ARE real punk bands around they could talk bout.. like the casualties and the unseen for instance.
anywayz. um... i know it's not a documentary but Hardcore Logo is a decent movie aboiut punk music (so i've been told i can't find it)

I agree 100%. Hard Core Logo is very accurate portraying the punk scene in Canada. Let's face it - this is a big country with lots of space between cities, and not a lot of punk fans in between. Still, Canada had a great punk scene all through the '80's and it's still out there today, but smaller than ever...

I'm all for signing to a major label in a band. i mean.. it GETS your band more exposure n stuff.
im not for changing your music style in order to sell records... i'm looknig at YOU Offspring. (consider 'smash' to 'conspiracy of one'
smash = some political stuff, very GOOD 90's punk album.
conspiracy of one.... = GARBAGE and utter crap.

the whole thing i find. not so much w/sum 41 and GC and blink 182 etc.
their music isn't PUNK. it's pop punk.. which is not a real form of music. well it shouldn't be... whiny lil voices singing bout how they can't get laid etc...
no punk doens't have to be political but that helps... spread a msg use your powers for good not evil (to quote bad religion)
i mean. i personally would rather here a rockin punk song about i dunno.. govt oppression or something as oppose to 'im so alone on a friday night. whine whine whine'
hence.. pop punk.
thats all

Your attitude is a waste! People who have decided politics aren't important are VICTIMS. You are HELPLESS to change your current situation. Politics is the ONLY force that drives ANYTHING. Keep your head in the sand if it makes you feel more comfortable, but you are just as bad as all the evil people in the world if you are politically unaware and do nothing to change the status quo!

Punk died after 1981? That's nuts. The Golden Years of punk were the decade of the 1980s. So much classic music in that decade. Punk basically died after 1990.

Ok it's not a post punk but if anyone is interested about west coast punk scene check out Decline of western civilization.

reply

I remember seeing a New Wave/Punk documentary on TV, I think it was VH-1, that had Jerry Casale of Devo as the narrator. Any help?

reply

The Decline Of Western Civilization Part 1. Good luck finding it.

Breaking Glass, while not a documentary, does feature some of the same music, adn it's about a fictional new wave post punk band.

The Mayor Of Sunset Strip, about DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, is also quite good (focus is not all on post punk new wave).

More to come.

reply

The Filth And The Fury, while focusing more on punk than new wave or post punk still covers a bit of the same territory. It's about The Sex Pistols, directed by Julien Temple.

OH btw I'm not replying specifically to gil 65 with my posts, but to the post at the very beginning. Sorry for any confusion.

I just came across a Documentary called "American Hardcore". I haven't seen it yet myself but am in the process of obtaining a copy. Its description here on IMDb says that it is "The History of American Punk Rock 1980-1986"
You can look into it yourself here and see if it is anything along the lines of what you're looking for:

American Hardcore covers heavily the Thrash Hardcore punk bands of the time period, nothing really underground, I didn;t find it that interesting....
