Dutch but no REAL Dutch actors

Like the topic name said.

I don't see a single dutch person in this movie, and that just blows.
Cus than it just aint right, nback than not even 3 of the 10 people spoke english, here in holland.
Even Rembrant himzelf in this movie is an straight out american.

THAT JUST BLOWS!!
i dont care if there good performers at least put one real dutch guy in there

The actor playing Rembrandt is British, not American. I doubt this will appease you at all, but at least he's not 'straight out american.'

Anyway, this complaint is silly. It's a film that doesn't even claim to depict real events but rather to work towards some thoughts inspired by the painting in a British filmmaker (I've read the script, and there's seriously a point where one of the characters says flat out that this is essentially one way of imagining the events surrounding a painting, and that the painting will survive all such attempts). The nationality of the actors is about as pertinent as figuring out if the sexuality of each actor lines up with the character.

If it makes you feel better, though, much of the crew on this and virtually every Greenaway film is Dutch.

(Just to end, and trying not to sound as harsh as I know I will, but I'd expect such a jingoistic Dutchman to spell Rembrandt's name correctly.)

this complain isnt silly man

angelmike matrix you really need to relax. the film in no way is trying to change a dutch man into and english man. it is simply an english actor playing a man who happens to be dutch in an english speaking film. and it has everything to do with being a peter greenaway film/script, as he is the man who is doing the casting. HE has the say of who plays what part. so HE has decided that martin freeman, an incredibly honest and smart actor, is the man to play rembrandt in HIS film. i reiterate: this film is a peter greenaway film. therefore this film is directed and decided by peter greenaway.

by the way, mr. greenaway lives in holland and has been paying homage to dutch painting in his films for many years.

now go and see the film when it comes out and then let´s continue the conversation at a later date.

I'm sure it has something to do with language, and the target audience. After all many more people speak English than Dutch. And the auditions. I can't imagine that many Dutch actors applied. I'm sure there were a few. But were they as capable as the ones chosen?

Greenaway had enough trouble getting this film distributed. I'm sure some name recognition was needed.

Good question for him nevertheless.

You do realize that the British royal family is called 'Hanoverian' because they're all really Germans, right? Since your other two examples are exaggerated and silly, and that one wouldn't be bad at all, I'm going to assume you know your argument is also silly.

reply

I don't agree with the original person's complaint. It might be nice to have a Dutch cast in a film dealing with Dutch history, but that by no means implies that the film or the calibre of acting would be better if it featured Dutch actors. That would be like saying Ben Kingsley shouldn't have played Gandhi because he isn't Indian. That seems to negate the very point of acting: one doesn't have to share the ethnic or national background of the character one is playing in order to do a good job. If the actors and film makers are able to create an interesting, insightful dramatic work who cares if they share the same national background as their subject matter. To say that only Dutch people can make a film about Dutch history seems to be a very limited and slightly racist view of things.

reply

Ben Kingsley is, however, of Indian descent.

But I agree with what you have said. It's acting. Ca va.

wow, another stereotype shattered, we're supposed to think all Dutch people are open minded, well educated and liberal (calm down man, maybe u should light up a doobie - it's legal there right?).

anyhoo, the thing you forget is that casting a film is WORK, and it costs money. it's hard enough for a filmmaker with a limited budget to find the right actor for a part, without making it harder by being limited to a tiny pool of actors because a few people (who obviously aren't Greenaway's audience)would rather the actor was Dutch. I'm much happier that Greenaway puts his time and effort into the amazing things he actually puts on the screen, and not nationalistic silliness.

Uhm - just curious - do you think Dutch actors should only be allowed to play Dutch characters?

Now if only this film will get a release in the USA...

"we're supposed to think all Dutch people are open minded, well educated and liberal (calm down man, maybe u should light up a doobie - it's legal there right?" Officially, No it's not......we just keep telling ourself, it's medical herbs..lol..

and most of us are open minded but you always have exceptions to the rule I guess..

As a Dutchie and from the city of Sodom and Gomorrah I just like to say that I really don't care which language is spoken or where the cast comes from.

I'm just proud that someone toke the time, money and interess to make a movie of a Dutch historical icon and his masterpiece.

Just like The Girl with the pearl earring, also in English and a mostly British cast but wonderfull movie about Johannes Vermeer.

We don't make movies like that so I'm glad a "foreigner" does..

Actually the production company is Dutch, and Greenaway lives in Amsterdam, but I agree it's a stupid complaint - a bit like saying only a Jewish guy should play Jesus or only an Italian play Julius Caesar. I wouldn't have any problem at all with a Dutch woman playing the Queen of England if the film was good (and I quite relish the memory of Quentin Crisp playing Queen Elizabeth 1 in "Orlando").

But then the OP is, I suspect, a troll (hence Scandinavian rather than Dutch). Incidentally, even dyslexic people can use spellcheckers, as far as I'm aware.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

actors play nationalities that are not their native ones all the time. thats why its called acting.

reply

Wow.. I'm going to apologize for my countyman here..

I'm Dutch and I can't wait to go see this movie. It's simple: Dutch films simply will never be able to scrape together the funds to make anything remotely on the level of this film or of 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. I'm glad there are people outside of the Netherlands taking an interest in the Golden Age and I really don't mind if the actors speak Dutch or not.. (After all, they're probably trying to reach an international audience and not a Dutch one. (A movie in Dutch would've only reached a Dutch audience and perhaps a few adventurers outside of the Netherlands willing to put up with subtitles..

Oh, and by the way Doctor-T-, technically it's still illegal to smoke marihuana in the Netherlands, but it's tolerated as long as it stays within reasonable amounts. If the police catches you transporting more than a certain amount, you're still in trouble.. ;)

Anyway, again; please don't think of the ramblings of one Dutchman as that of all of us..

jarnomiedema, you sound like a reasonable person. i like you.

While I am pleased that they had some fabulous British actors in this film, I wish they could have at least tried to sound Dutch. Every time they said "Geertje" I cringed.
