One of the most dull movies I've ever seen.

Christ on a crutch, this was boring. The cinematic equivalent of listening to a Shins album.

let that be a lesson to you. next time you spot something that looks to be a low budget 16mm/cheap digital indie flick with no stars, recognizable actors, or potential for gunshots or explosions - don't rent it.

or if you still insist you like movies about people talking, wait till Zach Braff puts something else out - so long as it doesn't have the Shins on the soundtrack.

reply

Awwww... Shut your self-righteous cakehole. "You wouldn't like this movie... There aren't any EXPLOSIONS!" You're using the most tired insult on IMDb. Just stop talking.

reply

Yup. Figured.

I hate Zach Braff. His wide nostrils kinda annoy me. I always feel I'm gonna fall into 'em or somethin'.

And FYI, I hate movies with explosions, gunfire, action, and all dat he-man movie crap. That's why I checked this flick out.

No mutual appreciation going on here. Ahem.

Most exciting movie I've ever seen: My Dinner With Andre.

I kid. I've only seen halfa that one. :-)

I couldn't help fixating on how the two male leads in M.A. seemed to have abnormally large nostrils also.

But, cavernous nostrils aside, the film failed to inspire. It was like whoever threw this film together just didn't care, and on top of that, spent very little time on it.

Camera work was good I thought, sound OK. So tech-wise, it was OK (could have used a bit more color, though ). Where things fell apart was with the writing. Dull, uninteresting characters who knew nothing and did less. No character development. Minor characters were introduced then disappeared, with no intro and then no closure. The film then "builds up" to a mild anticlimax and suddenly the credits run.

Not bad maybe for a high-school kid's first draft. But we should expect more from a film school level film maker who has time for 2nd draft and re-writes. Did no-one ever say to the writer and director: "Ummm, we could do this scene a bit better ..."

I enjoy minimalist films, art house flick and indies. But sometimes you have to sit through a garbage film or two. I prefergarbage where it's clear the people were trying. I did not get that impression with M.A.

random suggestion, rent the Aussie flick, 'Noise'.

You don't like the Shins either? Well, I guess its not everyone's piece of cake. Still, give me the Shins and give me "Mutual Appreciation" any day!

If this ranks as one of the dullest, what's the most exciting film you've ever seen?

reply

I like this film.

And c'mon, this had nothing in common with anything Zach Braff has done. his filmsa are so heavy handed and obvious. with an array of over-the-top overtly "othered" characters it makes it an incredibly prentious and stupid bore.

This is a unpretentious and genuinely funny film with some interesting ideas about performativity, power (in relationships), and gender roles.

It reminds me of my friends, and I like my friends, and I would like watch this film with my friends.

It's all about taste.

Wasn't it Rossellini who said only the boring can't find the beauty in the mundane and the everyday?

I'd like to know the full quote, if anyone knows it. A Google search found nothing.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Easy to dismiss this a a cinema verite movie, but it is actually quite well constructed and framed in terms of its shots and cut aways. It's by no means amateurish. The plot may be inane, but hell, it's well done inane.

Having not heard a Shins album, I can't comment, but maybe I should go and download one just for the comparison.

Anyway, this was a bit of a sleeper to begin with, but it certainly picked up towards the end and I actually enjoyed it. It is maybe an hour longer than it needs to be, but hey, languid is cool right?

One thought that did spring to mind was that if this is an accurate representation of the experience of life of the current generation of late-teens to early twenties, then god they live miserable, uninteresting lives.

Cracking film. Just nice to see a film where nothing happens. Maybe he was expecint a film more like Clerks.

For what its worth, I loved this film, love the Shins and i Loved Garden State. I also love Harold and Kumar tho so go figure.

And I loved the 2 lady interests in this, great film

I just wish people would back up thier criticisms rather than expecting us to know what they mean. If this was boring, tell us why.
