Was that spike gun real that they used on the cows?

I have never seen anything like it but yet it looked pretty realistic

Yeah, that's real. It's called a captive bolt gun.

It's the best tradeoff between cost and humane killing. When done properly, it knocks out the higher brain functions faster than the nerve conduction velocity, so the cow feels no pain.

It's certainlly more humane than how we killed animals in the past: over minutes or hours with arrows stuck between their ribs while they slowly bleed to death.

Domesticated cows were originally killed by having their throats cut and bleeding them out. In slaughterhouses and cattleyards, sledgehammers were used to keep that heart beating while the cow bled out (to prevent the meat from spoiling)
Hammering hundreds of cows takes too long; captive bolt is better and faster

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

Jews & Muslims still do it like that today. Any Kosher or Halal meat you buy comes from an animal that bled out with it's throat cut.

Last year the nationalist anti-Muslim party in my country tried to have the practice banned, but suddenly backpedaled when they found out their precious Jews were doing the same..

The killer in this season's Haven (SyFy) used one, as did the villian in No Country For Old Men.
