Laura Linney was excellent!!!!!

Laura Linney is an excellent actor that deserves all of the kudos she gets for her acting. This character was so self absorbed and a manipulator it was chilling.

That being said the screenplay could have used some work. Julie Walters was a little too over the edge for me. Some scenes she hit right on, others fall flat.

I wasn't bored during the movie like some of the other reviewers have said. Not bad.

6 out of a 10.

I disagree. While Laura Linney is a good actress, her accent was so distracting I almost couldn't watch the parts that she was in. I thought she was the worst part of the movie.

mushrmcourtgrl i agree. Her accent was terrible! and, she didn't really do anything new here. I just felt like i was watching Laura Linney instead of the character. I usually like her as an actress, but not in this film

reply

Agreed. I saw an add for it and her accent was so American I thought she was playing an American mum and then I watch the movie and she's supposed to be English? It was distracting.

She played the part so well that now whenever I see her picture, I'm going to instinctively recoil, even though Ben's Mom and Laura Linney are two separate people! If there's ever a remake of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, she'd be perfect to play Nurse Ratched !

Laura Linney sucked. Her accent was lousy and her character was miserable. She did nothing to make the old hag mother likable. Rotten performance.

reply

Yes, the accent got in the way of her perfromance. She was the worst part of the movie, you could tell she was concentrating on the accent , not the performance !! You could see her " Acting " not a smooth peformance !!

reply

Are you deaf? Laura Lunney ruined this movie for me! She didn't even try using an accent. And I am an American & have been a fan of LL since Tales of the City but she was awful in this.
